My first thought was that you're right again
. But then I thought, who ever said that letter jackets were for jocks alone. Personally I think they should be. However, the jacket identifies the school, an extraciricual activity, and an accomplishment. While most of us are old school and run with the athletic blinders on, I think the letter jacket exemplifies "school", "team" and "accomplishment" all of which these groups identify with. What alternative do these "other teams" have?
