I think it is mostly a fundraiser for their USA Baseball travel expenses. They already know before it starts, which kids will make the team, for the most part. JMO

I believe this to be 100% true. Is it possible for a kid to go there and set the world on fire, of course, but for the most part, they know who will make the team.
