Jerry, Take heart - he ruined my day a few years ago as well. Although it was personal - and not business. Just a little insight from a parent who has had an "experience" with Bear. Just the facts. Several years ago - my eldest son went to one of his tournaments. My son had a leg injury at the time - but was still able to play. Bad weather - but we got a few games in. In the last game we played - we played Bear's team. My eldest son - from a baseball perspective - destroyed his team. He hit...

Re: Great Body

Three Bagger ·
While the "studly" looking guy probably gets the first look and often the first chance, the very makeup of baseball with all its built in failure still tends to eventually give the more unathletic looking guy his eventual chance. After a while the coach just leaves the "bad-body" guy in there if he's a real ballplayer. But that type of guy does tend to have to be more of a scrapper and hustler to make a first impression.

I just noticed this thread...great article on CD's son, Tyler. A hustler, grinder, a guy that nobody's going to out work. It doesn't matter if it's Little League, High School, College, or Pro Ball...coaches, fans, and other players appreciate guys giving it 110% on and off the field.

Re: How many chances a coach should give a player?

How does he relate to the other players? Is he a good teammate? A hustler? A little bit of emotions and some sulking can be tolerated for some younger players but if it habitual yank him aside and give him an ultimatum -- shape up or ship out. A mentor doesn't mean you have to be a psychologist. Most young men WANT a strong male presence in their life.

The amazing thing is...You can preach to a kid about the importance of hustle and game presence, yet often times they still don't get it. Sometimes it's just not part of a kids makeup. There is more to it than diving for a catch or running out a groundball. Passion, Heart, Hate to lose attitude, The insatiable desire to achieve. It is these things that a player possesses that manifest themselves on the field and is what we call...A HUSTLER. You just know it when you see it. TR makes an...

I have to confess that I've never seen Conway pitch. He's only played SS at any of the Hustler games I've attended, so I can't comment on him as a pitcher. But I do have to say that I thought he did a really fine job at SS. I also really liked Mike Minch at middle infield as well. I'm a big fan of Mike's. He's a real bulldog and he's automatic defensively. I think he's one of the most coachable kids I've known. He's a real winner. Jacob Pendergraft was a real bright spot on that Hustler team...

This is what happened with our first PG event last week. Maybe summarizing the experience will be helpful to others. The event was changed to a new location about a week or week and a half before the event was to take place. Then it became a two-day rather than a three-day event (maybe not enough people were registered, I don't know the reason for the change but it seemed rather smaller than what I thought it would be). Not all the outfielders that registered showed up, so son volunteered to...

Even if your son is the next future 5-tool D1 collegiate star and is or one day might be the local high school phenom, right now while you still have the chance is the opportune time to be teaching him the "other" gifts which Coaches, recruiters, and scouts are looking at just as hard. The intangibles, those hidden gems such as natural leadership, demeanor, respect, courtesy, a mentor, a friend, a teammate, a volunteer, a hustler, has initiative, a motivator, an encourager, etc. The "young...

Yes it was certainly a great pleasure meeting CD and seeing his son in action. Dan has provided so much positive feed back to many on the message board here, and he is no different when you meet him in person. I enjoyed meeting his wife and her great personality. She was cheering on every player of her son’s team, great hit, great play, great pitch. I believe Tyler gets a lot of his emotion for the game from her as it was apparent he plays with a positive attitude at all times. I have gone...

cabbagedad, You're exactly right....Coffey sprinting from the bullpen to the infield in 99 degree heat was the Nats highlight of the day (Sunday). The fans went crazy for him. Coffey is a big DUDE! I saw more hustle out of Coffey in that 30 seconds than I saw in Werth "jogging" after some foul balls. Nothing iritates me or my wife more than to see a major leaguer or professional baseball player not hustle. Just one of those pet peeves. Coffey is defintely a hustler and intense guy. I love it.

"Coffey is defintely a hustler and intense guy" Hustling 2 or 3 times a week onto the field does not make you intense or a hustler. If he worked at all outside of that 100 foot sprint when the crowds are there he wouldn't be 300+ pounds. He is just putting on a show. I doubt if he runs like that at anytime other than when the buffet line opens up.

OK, so maybe he's a hustler of a different kind. The day we saw him, they were wearing throwbacks with no markings on the front of the jerseys that, well, lets just say... accentuated his jiggling man-****s.

I like to tell kids, 'We all can't pick the ball up on the warning track and throw the ball to home plate on a line, but we all can hustle" One of my favorite hustle stories I also like to tell the kids is that I went to an colleg game one afternoon and the game one starter for one team throws a gem; wins 2-1... then in game 2 he's out chasing foul balls in the parking lot and the next moment on the top step encouraging his guys... hustle was his way of life; he didn't have to get up in the...

Re: Is being on the best Travel teams the answer?

Coach May is one of our site's greatest assets. Rule #1 - get on a team where you will play ALL the time if possible. Rule #2 - refer to Rule # 1. The most important part for a young ballplayer is to play. Baseball is the ultimate skill sport and it takes thousands of repetitions to become good at it. Yes playing against higher level competition and having higher level team members may help in that regard but it is not the most important part. Speed and strength training is also very...

I've always said that if there had been no Derek Jeter and Biggio had played for the Yankees, he would have gotten a farewell tour, been a first ballot Hall of Famer and been also absolutely beloved by Yankees fans. He was the same type of player as Jeter--a hustler and quite leader. He just didn't get near as many post season opportunities because he wasn't surrounded with high paid stars and free agents. As I said before, his numbers until 2000 were compiled in the worst hitters park in ...

If a recent change of address and new coach isn't enough to change Hanley's habit of not hustling, nothing will. He's way too cool to hustle! I watched that game last night, and thought of this thread. We'll see if Mattingly can get a leopard to change it's spots. I don't see it, but maybe he'll fogure it out by his 4th organization. fillsfan - great example with Juan Pierre. wraggarm, I kind of observed the same myself so glad that you put it out there. CoachB is not giving an excuse, he is telling it like it is. And FWIW, no one knows what a player is going through on any given day. Yadi isn't always known to be a hustler, and he sure has a good excuse if he doesn't! The Hanley saga is interesting. He definitively needed a change, and maybe a different organization will get him back on the track he should be. Two former coaches had issues with him, and who did...

Thanks very much to twotex, tx-hustler and BOF. Can you tell me what a guaranteed spot actually means? The coach told my son, "I am not married to anyone in any position, the best players play. I need you to play where ever you can help me win". The coach had my son play 3 different positions during the showcase. This seems like a pretty fair and honest way to coach. Is this is a concern to anybody and if so why?

4luv, First of all, and most importantly, keep up the hustle--you're already ahead of the game if you don't let your teammates bring you down. My son, now a senior, has always been a hustler and to this day is ragged on by other players who think its "hokie". Secondly, your body is still developing and you eventually will get stronger and faster naturally. But you CAN improve your speed to a certain degree. ptwood I have a legitimate and serious question. How would you fix it? I've actually thought long and hard about it. I don't know either. On one hand the supposed responsible decision makers in the college coaching rank could fix it immediately, IF they wanted to. But they don't and won't. You have approached a situation now where many of the younger assistant coaches have grown up from showcase payers to now young men coaching. This system is ingrained in them as the norm. They are fully...
