Re: Playing for HS and Showcase at same time?

Aleebaba ·
I doubt if there are any rules to prevent this, but HS coach would likely not like this at all. There are unwritten rules that Select team ball starts after HS, as there is always a concern for injury and overuse, (especially with pitchers). If your son gets hurt playing on the weekend the HS coach will get very angry and make it harder for him and others to play on team in the Summer. That is why there is an unwritten truce.

In many states, it is not allowed. I know in Illinois that applies at any level. Have seen freshmen teams have to forfeit games because of it..

Your best bet is to contact UIL directly. Darryl Beasley, asst. ath. dir., 512-471-5883, dbeasley@uiltexas.org . You may want to consider the coaches position, if the JV player would be considered for a move to Varsity come playoff time. I'm in Dallas, & unless it is a reversal or a very recent change, I don't believe UIL would allow it. I know Varsity players could not. Son did attend a couple tournaments/showcases in the fall, missing a day of school each time due to travel, no...

UIL does not govern activities outside of school; May students participate in non-school activities? Answer: Students may participate in non-school activities at anytime. This means that a student may play, practice or praticipate in a try-out for non-school teams The statement above was copied directly from the baseball manual in the Q&A section. The manual can be viewed on http://www.uiltexas.org/baseball .

Yep, familiar with the above. OP didn't specify whether these were weekend tourneys, or otherwise conflicted with HS season schedule. That is the unknown factor. Times have changed.

Had this come up for the first time last year and there were no real problems. Kid was a catcher. He did not miss his HS games. Only time it affected him was he had a weekend tourn and did not get in until 2-3 a.m. Monday morning and we had a district game Monday afternoon. He was dragging after 4 tourn games and getting in lat and then playing that Monday

Re: Playing for HS and Showcase at same time?

I would think that any HS kid that skipped a school practice or game, would very quickly find himself playing for the showcase team only, so there would be no further conflicts. Time spent at HS practice or games would not be "outside of school". School activities come first. I haven't seen much of this problem beyond freshman ball. Once you get to the older, the tounaments don't typically start till June, do they? My son's team will start practices in early May, but always on Saturday or...

Thank you for all of the great answers.... Just to clarify.... There is no conflict between the high school team and the tournament team. High school games and practices are during the week. Tournament games are on the weekend. We had always heard that it was the coaches that didn't want their players playing and getting hurt outside of school, and then we heard that it was a UIL rule, but the UIL rules for texas do not actually state whether they can or cannot play during a district season.

JeffLovin, My opinion only, but kids need an adequate amount of down time/ recovery time & study time. There is truth to the saying "there's only so many bullets in the holster"...During HS season, 2 games a week + 1-1/2 to 2 hrs a day practice, during a week seems like plenty of playing time for kids under 18 & not in College. After HS season is done, there's 3-4 days a week until mid Nov. That's still a lot of innings, AB's or whatever. When he gets to college baseball will consume...

Tryouts for 17/18 Texas Dukes

JJones ·
Does the team you play for truly help you get recruited? Do they charge you extra for that recruiting help? They shouldn't. Playing for the Texas Dukes means that players get seen by college coaches and get recruited. A lot of teams say they will help you, but they are a business. The Texas Dukes is a small organization which has been helping kids get recruited for 12 years. The organization knows all of its players and their families and works side by side to help navigate and find college...

We still have open positions. There will be no special date for tryouts as they are incorporated into team practices. The team plays on Sundays at colleges, and in some cases against the college teams. So far, the schedule includes: NCTC, Cisco, Tarleton, Brookhaven, Richland and NTCC. Re: Should Your son Play Fall Ball

Chico Escuela ·
Thanks for posting the article. It does make some good points. My 2020 son gave up soccer this fall (he made varsity last year) to play fall ball. I would have been fine either way, but he decided he wants to focus on baseball and he wasn't happy with the way he played this summer. I think that multiple sports are best, especially before HS. And because my son Is primarily a pitcher, I absolutely count his innings and his total pitches--if he were near 100 innings, he wouldn't pitch this...

Regarding Fall Baseball with a Travel Team vs. High School team: I wholeheartedly agree that it should be one or the other to prevent overuse or fatigue. That being said, make sure the juice is worth the squeeze, IE: is your TB team playing a similar amount of games and similar completion as your HS Fall team? If so, is the cost worth it? Bottom line, just make sure which ever direction you go, your son is being developed properly without overuse or without breaking the bank before he's even...

Son is a position player who played fall ball throughout. He used it to tinker with a few things in swing, or used more situational approaches (hitting the other way, etc). Son played varsity soccer during fall, few conflicts. Fall ball coaches knew he would not make any practices. Hit fine and threw, but baseball running was more sluggish from soccer. Fall ball particularly was beneficial junior year, when he went to a couple of school specific camps, where he remained sharp.

I read that article last night, and it made sense. Cressey is a shoulder guy, it's an easy concept to understand that the less stress on your shoulder the better your overall shoulder health will be. A tweet that he retweeted yesterday shortly after this article was "The best arm care tip you can give is not an exercise; rather, it's telling a 12-year-old not to pitch 12 months a year."

Fall Ball is great for freshman. Gets them accustomed to the coaches, teammates, and quite frankly... its the longest tryout they will ever get. For the Upperclassman, it all depends on if it fits into their plan (see JOEMKTG's post, above).

Should Your son Play Fall Ball

S.Young ·
Hey All, I just read this interesting article from Cressey Sports about the value, if any, to your son playing baseball in the fall. I think for most of us, many of our decisions come down to asking the right questions, and I think this article does a great job of helping us ask the right questions as it pertains to fall ball. Check it out here https://ericcressey.com/should-you-play-fall-baseball Enjoy!

Re: Should Your son Play Fall Ball

joemktg ·
It's a question without any context, and the answer is more complex than what the article delineates. The question that should be posed is this: "What is the role that 2017 fall ball plays in the long term plan?" Prerequisite: a long term plan. Without that, then the player/parent is floating along without a rudder. So for you parents out there with middle schoolers and early HS players: pull together your plan.
