Arizona Fall Junior Classic 2016

For what it's worth, I took my 2018 to the one day academic tryout and game yesterday. Due to the ACT he isn't playing with a team this weekend. The event was very well organized. Total of 227 kids, they held tryouts from 8-1:30, and posted 2 teams of 27 kids that played each other last night in SD Padres spring facility stadium. Each team consisted of 9 pitchers, 17 position players, 1 DH. With the position players getting 4.5 innings of play and 3 AB's. Son made the team. He was very...

First off, is there a feature where one can search the forums? Great info. Keep us posted if you hear from any coaches. Would like to know how it works. Thinking of taking my 2019 next year. How and when do you sign up for the academic tryouts? Is it open to every one who qualifies academically?

Anyone with a 3.7 GPA or 1200 SAT (new version)/ 27 ACT score can apply for the tryout. Not everyone is picked for the tryout. Tryout consists of 60 yd. dash, defensive workout, and two rounds of hitting. A LOT of kids tryout but as Gov said they whittle the numbers down to two manageable teams. The game is very well scouted, but so are the tryouts themselves. Just getting to tryout is a nice way to be seen by a captive audience. There are no other games going on during the tryout, so the...

Any idea how they "select" the ones to tryout? Do they base it on academics? Clearly they haven't seen the kids play so can not be based on skills. Has anyone heard any kids got denied? So far anyone who applied seemed to have been selected to tryout. Other question (I remember it's already discussed somewhere): it seems logical that if you are aiming for D1 you go to the Junior event; if you aim for D3 you go to the Senior event. True?

I had an email exchange with the tournament owner before the 2015 Jr. Classic, and she told me that they had not turned away anyone up to that point for the Jr. Classic, though they do for the Sr. Classic. I do not know what their criteria are. Test scores + reputation of kid's travel team? Just a guess. As for your second question, that makes sense if you assume that most D1 schools have gotten all their commits for the following year by the time of the Sr event, and that D3 schools don't...

Bogey, to be selected for the tryout they review academics and skills video. I was told it's easier to gain entry to the Junior HS event because people are just learning about the event and the players don't have enough graded semesters for the high academic colleges to be looking seriously at them. For the Senior HS event you'll have more kids scrambling to be seen due to their short time line to get an offer. Good for the D3's, it's a one day or weekend event to get a last look to fill...

There's likely some truth to the D1 jr classic/D3 sr. classic distinction. However, my 2017 got some mid-major D1 interest coming out of this year's sr. classic, and several D3s got in touch with him as well, both at the event and by email a few days later. Gov, how did the skills video work? We didn't submit any for the tryout; wondering if it might have been useful to get selected for the actual game.

It was an item asked for on the application. We figured we'd include the video to increase the odds of being selected. I'm not sure if it influenced his selection for the game or not... I guess it could have put him on the radar... At the tryout he performed well and it's a small pond in a way - kids with a 3.7 that can play. Minor note: the game was pitching dominated, only a few kids hitting, and the same 2-3 kept hitting. My son had 2k's & F3, so his bat was off at the game, which was...

The Academic try-out / all-star game is a A+ event. My son did it in 2014 . Lots of schools and yes, the coaches do not speak to the rising Jrs. But they do email. Uncommitted guys need to follow up w/ emails to coaches in attendance. Expressing interest in the schools and updating them on standardized testing prep work or test scores

I definitely think there is something to this. My son, a 2018, attended the Senior event and, while their were a pretty good number of recruiters watching when he pitched, the only D1's I spotted were schools there because we had pre-arranged it. The VAST majority standing there were from D2's, D3's and JC's - lots of JC's.

Just submitted my son's application for the 2019's AZ Fall Classic Junior All Academic game in October 2017, but they did not ask for a video link on the application, just the GPA or SAT/ACT Scores, High School, email for school counselor...and not surprisingly my credit card number :-( . Just as an FWIW, video was not asked for.

I'm not sure if the itinerary is the same for the Junior Classic as it is for the Senior one, but be sure to let your travel team coach know that your son may be invited to the tryout and that he could be selected for the Academic Game that night. They now have scheduled other games and activities for that same Thursday, so there could be a conflict with his travel team schedule. Better to be safe than sorry and tell the coach of your plans. My 2017's team was cool with it, but his day...

I thought I would revive a thread like this instead of creating a new one or hijacking others. IMHO this is one of the better showcase game for those who qualify. As stated above there is a minimum GPA, SAT/ACT to even be considered. My son participated in the Jr, made the team and did well in the game. Basically breaks down as 1/2 day tryout by position (have maybe 15-20 balls, throws, bats) and the results are announced later that day. Evening game follows. What makes this different is it...

I would have to agree, this is one of the better showcases to participate in. My son went from 0 coach contacts to 12 to 15 within a week after the junior showcase game. This was our first showcase, as he didn't really have any skills that grabbed your attention his freshman and sophomore year. If your son has the grades and something to show, I would highly recommend it. One caveat... pitching commands the most attention.

Great idea to revive this post now while the application period is open for both sessions. I am not sure there is any preference given to the early applicants over the later ones, but better to get it in early to be on the list. And remember there is no guarantee of even getting invited to tryout, but they refund the money if a kid is not selected. IMO its a 'Must Do' event for kids looking to play at smart schools. Like Area Codes, Even the try-outs are Stacked. w/ RC's and HC's. Havard, Berkeley, Duke......They're ALL there.

My son was invited to try out and we are planning to go out there but I am getting worried now as people question me what if my son doesn't make the team.. didn't think of this until we signed up and got the email back that he is invited. AZ Academic Classic was definitely one of the best. It might be a little late but if your son does not have a team for the weekend ask around. Just be cautious though that this can be a financial decision for the teams (more players mean more team funding, NOT necessarily more playing time). If your son does extremely well and if a school wants him there will be a way to find some money. Since you are already there might want to catch the AZ Fall League MLB Top Prospects games if you can't...

I was not aware you need to go as a team. players report at Padres field and try out in the morning ..3pm it will be posted if the player gets picked... if they get picked they get to play a game at 5pm..this year it is held on Oct 18 for the junior all academic try out and game..... I'm assuming there is just two teams formed so they can play a game. Did I miss something?

You asked if it was going to be worth it. If it's the only thing you're doing, and it sounds like it is, you're asking a great question. There will be scouts at the tryouts, so a kid will be seen whether they make the game or not, but most kids do NOT make the evening game. It's incredibly competitive and if a kid does make it, practically every scout at the Classic will be there watching. The tryout has a lot of stuff going on at once--some positions hitting, some running, some doing...

For pitchers I think 85+ will get you in the junior game. Smoke is right about the 60. It was run in the outfield warning track, which was very soft. Like running in sand. Times were .2 to .3 slower than they would be on turf.

Once he confirmed with his travel team that we were in for the Senior Classic games, he then signed up on the web page. I want to say it was early July. It is my belief that neither the GPA or test scores are verified (only need 1 off the 2 to "qualify" anyway). My 2018 participated in the Jr. Academic try-out's this year and his GPA was not verified (counselor @ school informed us she never received a call/email to verify), nor were we asked to submit his transcript. He has yet to take the SAT/ACT Honor system perhaps?

That's my understanding, as well. Son was able to try out for both Jr. and Sr. academic games. We sent in GPA and one test score. Either would have passed their threshold. Neither were verified as far as we know.
