I asked this question last year myself.  In my sons case it was a 12u event and they pretty much ran the stats from the kids who had the best batting average and the top X percent got listed as being part of the all tournament team.  Very similar thing happened with pitchers.

Now if it's an older age group my understanding is they take into account the stats as well as the reports from the PG person who watched the game as to who makes the list.  As for what does it mean....nothing, it's just a cool banner at the bottom of his PG profile page to look at.

What does this mean and how does a player get selected to the All Tournament Team?

It means that a player has met or surpassed metrics applied to players who are at the top end of performance. For position players, it's about the hitting. For pitchers, it's about run prevention.

It's importance is in the eye of the beholder. We found it very important for two reasons:

  1. Used as a benchmark to compare quantifiables against peers, and adjust the workout program accordingly.
  2. It's one of the many metrics PG uses in its efforts to rank players, as well as issue invites to PG Jr. Nationals and PG Nationals.

Interesting.

Next question ... My 16u player was named to the All Tournament Team in 3 events.  We noticed it a couple of weeks ago.  Checked his profile again this week ... All of them are inexplicably gone.

Were you behind in your subscription?

Just kidding!  I just found this on my son's article that was released today.

**Players who do not have their Participant and/or Media Releases signed are not eligible to be displayed on the All-Tournament Team on our website. There is no fee for this process. If you need help getting the releases signed, please contact Ellie Keast at ellie@perfectgame.org.

I stumbled across this older post. The verbiage below is from PG's recent East Cobb Invitational All-Tourney.

"The players selected were based on first-hand observations as well as statistical data compiled using DiamondKast, the official scoring application of Perfect Game."

It gets a little confusing, I think, if the player makes all-tourney for some reason other than a pitcher or hitter (based on first hand observation) since the player's name doesn't always appear in the article anywhere.

THEROVER,

Seems you have a problem.  Why would money have anything to do with naming an All Tournament team?  Seems common sense would prevail.  There are far more players that don't make All Tournament, All Prospect lists, Rankings, etc., than those on any list.  What about all those that don't make the list, are we telling those parents to stop spending money?

It is extremely important to be profitable.  But for some reason there are people that think everything we do is about making money rather than trying to provide opportunities for talented players and helping MLB scouts and college recruiters.  Just like any other business, revenue is vitally important.  A business doesn't last for over 20 years by fooling people.

Any real mistakes we make can be corrected by simply contacting... staff@perfectgame.org

BTW, we need the releases signed for liability purposes.  There is no mandatory subscription to anything required.

My son was named All Tournament Team at the 16u WWBA Championships last year. I looked at the list and there were kids we never saw and a few we played against that were legit. We used the All Tourney honors in his emails to the schools that he was interested in this year and I think it helped to garner a response and subsequently start conversations. In other words it was better to have put that on his resume than to not have used it.
