What are your thoughts on this?

My player attended winter camps at a few schools prior to his Jr year spring season. Some of those schools came to see his HS games, some did not. Some have stayed in touch with my player, some have not.

I am wondering if it is worthwhile for my player to return and attend the summer prospect camps at some of these schools. I am sure many of these are mass mailings. If the school never reached out to my player I am assuming they are not really interested in the player. Schools who have been in touch, do you want to give them one more look or assume they've seen enough?

Thoughts?

Well, the fact that some came to see his HS games points to some interest.  Those that stayed in touch points to some more interest, although still not "love" if they haven't acted on it.  Those that didn't stay in touch points to less interest.

You asked... "Do you want to give them one more look?"

I don't think there are always definitive answers.  Does the player have more to show now?  Does school have a need now that they didn't have before?  Etc., etc.

I think the camp event makes for a good discussion point for him to call prior and ask some pointed questions and try to get some clarity where he stands with a given school.  If a school is on his list and there has been some dialog, he can call, tell them he is interested in the school and trying to line up events with schools who are mutually interested in him but can't afford the time or money to go to events where there is no real interest.  Where am I on your board?  Does it make sense to come?  If so, will you be able to show me around the school a bit and talk in more detail about where you see me fitting?  I think these types of questions prior to the events will tell you much of what you need to know.

The "go where you are loved" mantra is preached hard here and it is a very good one.  But, I believe there are an awful lot of good players that can contribute at the college level that won't get clear love in their recruiting process so it isn't always that simple.  But, still, every effort should be made to know exactly where you stand before you commit.

I certainly wouldn't recommend going to a camp without having some previous dialog with the RC or HC.  Although of course, if the player shows up at a mid level school camp throwing 89, decent secondary stuff and command, he will turn heads.

As a side note - this is probably for others more so that you since you have already attended some of these...  be careful to identify and separate "prospect" camps from regular camps.  Sometimes, the line is fuzzy but most often, colleges will have one or two true "prospect" camps where the intention is to bring in players who have the ability and are of the age to actually get a look as a prospect for the school.  With these events, it is fairly common that a few or many have been specifically invited and there are meetings set up around the actual camp.

Then, they will have general camps where players across a wide range of ages and skill levels can attend.  These are more just to raise $$ for the program.

Does it always have to be attending college camps solely to try to get recruited?  Asking sincerely

There are a few college camps my Kid is excited about attending for the experience and the opportunity to learn.  And if he enjoys it as much as he thinks he will he'd like to go back multiple times.

Attending college camps should be about learning and having a fun day. It should never be about anything else unless you are specifically asked to attend to talk to the coach.

I agree with cabbagedad.

If a recruit has been to a camp, coaches have come watched at games, and nothing happened, it may be time to try another approach.

Coaches frequently change hats since your son attended the winter skills camp some time ago.  I don't know specifics, but I'd ask your son to lob a call into the coaching camp contact to get more details about the camp and possibly about their interest in him.  He should mention he's attended their winter camps, and see what they say.   He's got nothing to lose.   JMO.

I agree with Fenway regarding asking them.  My guys did this and typically got very candid answers.

If your son is a 2018, then he would know who's loving him.  And if they love him, there's no need to attend a camp again.

The harder one is the "maybe"...then it's very useful to know where your son is on their recruiting board (ask the coaches) so you guys can decide whether to spend the time and money or not.

Good luck!

My son attended some college winter camps.  He got some notice, but they are obviously inside here in Ohio so they didn't show a lot.  If it was a school he liked, and they showed interest we tried to get back to a summer camp.  Outdoors, on the field and typically has some game or at least game conditions....which gave him a better opportunity to show coaches what he could do.  They typically aren't real expensive....so we didn't mind hitting a couple others even if they hadn't shown interest if he liked the school

The only reason I could think to go a second time, would be if had a big jump in his measurable's. If he is a pitcher and his velocity has made a big jump. Or if he just really enjoyed the experience.

Kent state used to have a two day camp the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. Kent State did not match his requirements for a college. But we took him and his brother every year, from Sophomore through Senior year, because he enjoyed the camp and got a lot out of it. He learned something every time he went. The coaches got to know him and were always very friendly and helpful. They always took the time to show him different things, and point out possible issues with his delivery. However it was pretty clear they were not interested in recruiting him.

We went every year, because he learned a lot and enjoyed the time there.
