Hi, I am hoping people can give me some good places to try some of the local fare .We will be in Georgia(Lake Point) this year and I am looking for some great places to try some good local food . Really don't like to eat chain food if, I can help it.

We stayed in Cartersville, GA on our trip to Lakepoint in March. We ate Shrimp and Grits at the City Cellar. Yummy. Several years prior had a lovely dinner at the Appalachian Grill.

If you don't have them where you live, you must go to Chick-fil-a. (Based in Atlanta)
Fun 24-hr place where you can also can take the players is the Marietta Diner. HUGE portions, lots of variety.
Last year, we ate a place that was sort of a Korean BBQ/Southern BBQ fusion joint. A little hole in the wall -- a few tables on a patio, but mostly take out. It was really good. I think it was just inside the perimeter not too far where we were staying in Marietta. Definitely one of a kind. It was called Heirloom Barbecue, if I recall correctly.
The Varsity is downtown and a landmark! Great HotDogs!
If you like pizza...this place was featured on Man vs Food...the pizza is HUGE!
Doug's is right around the corner in Emerson, typical Meat & 3, good ole southern cooking. I second the Marietta Diner, great food and the cakes they have from Alpine Bakery are incredible. Fat Matt's is an Atlanta landmark as well, get there early for lunch (line forms) and live music every night i believe. Henry's in Acworth, just south of Emerson is pretty good Cajun cuisine and a great atmosphere. Call ahead to see if they have a wait. Welcome & Enjoy!
I live up that way so PM me if you need/want additional info… As mentioned, Doug’s Place is just down the street. Typical meat & 3. A lot of people go there for the chicken livers. Scott’s Walk Up BBQ on Tennessee St is some of the best BBQ in the area. Just down from Scott’s is Brandy’s World Famous Hotdogs. Great chili dogs and chili burgers. As others have mentioned, Marietta Diner is really good and Henry’s, just South of the park in Acworth (actually just turn left out of the park parking lot and it will take you right to it), is definitely worth a trip.
Marietta Diner is good, but about 10 miles from there on Highway 5 the same owners have a steakhouse called The Cherokee Cattle Company that is pretty pricey but the Western Luau steak is amazing as well as their home made dressings. They also own the Marietta Fish Market, also on Highway 5, which has some of the best seafood around.
Big Pie in the Sky really does have great pizza, thin crust, orange oil dripping fun! The Varsity is a landmark but you may want to pat your onion rings down in paper napkins first, the grease is truly abundant. A local favorite chain is a place called Martin's, they are only open for Breakfast and Lunch and they are reasonably priced...same pat down with the napkins may be required for any fried foods.
You will find many hole in the wall places that are only open for Breakfast and Lunch and typically will have a dry erase board listing "Meats & Veggies", a typical order is a "Meat" and two "Veggies" which could be Country Fried Steak/French Fries/Squash Casserole. One such place is Carol's Cafe in Marietta...they have the most amazing skillets for Breakfast.
When in doubt call local restaurants and ask if they have Country Fried Steak on the menu, that will typically be good authentic Georgia food.
Will second "Doug's" as real authentic southern cuisine. Williamson Bros. BBQ is good, but I would recommend JD's BBQ just off downtown Acworth as closer and just as good an option. Henry's (already mentioned) is excellent Louisiana cuisine, and if you have time and want to make a drive for another EXCELLENT cajun option, Gumbeaux's in Douglasville is outstanding. Marietta Diner is good, but in my opinion (as a local), not great. Portions are huge and they have a desert altar worthy of sacrifice, the taste is average diner food. You can eat at Marietta Fish Market off Canton Road and just a couple of miles from East Cobb Baseball. It's run by the same family (they run four local restaurants) that owns Marietta Diner (Marietta Diner, Marietta Fish Market, Cherokee Cattle Company and Pasta Bella).
Also, a hole in the wall that is very good in Cartersville is a place called 8 tracks (70's theme bar and grill with really good food). An excellent restaurant/bar is Olde Towne (lemon pepper wings are fantastic) on 41 near Cobb Airport. All their food is outstanding. Neither of these are "Georgia Cuisine", but are great dining options.
In downtown Atlanta, the Silver Skillet is legen.....wait for it....dary.
Of course, the ultimate Georgia Cuisine . . . . Waffle House.

You should go to Gladys & Ron's for chicken and waffles. It's a neat little restaurant tucked away in downtown Atlanta. They serve all manner of fried chicken and other southern staples but it's best known for the chicken and waffles. It's really popular with locals and we waited over 2 hours for lunch (no reservations) and was worth every minute.

Son and I shared the Sampler + the $6 add on meat (Brisket, Kielbasa, Pulled Beef and Pork, Rack of Ribs)... Total with 2 drinks and 3 sides was around $30... Food was awesome, we couldn't finish it... Just had the leftovers for lunch, awesome!!! A+++ Great recommendation! Thanks!

My son and I will be heading down to LP for the 16U WWBA . I figured I'd bump this so that other people can enjoy some great food recommendations. We probably hit 5 of these spots . I can't recall the names of which ones but, they were all good. If anyone has any more recommendations feel free to add them to the list .
Grand Champion BBQ in Roswell. There are a couple GC locations around the area, but the Roswell location is on a great, happenin' street. If you make it into Town, hit Krog Street Market, new Ponce City Market, and/or Fox Bros BBQ. If have time, pub crawl on the Beltline.
IF you have time for breakfast, i absolutely recommend The Marietta Local on the square in Marietta. It is quality food cooked to perfection. Chicken and French toast served all day long and the Cheese grits are the best if I've ever had, hands down! You wont regret it

Doug's in Emerson I really like. Don't expect anything fancy, just good food. Everyone should go there and experience Doug's Place at least once.
Henry's in Acworth is really good.
Also there is a place in Marietta (Canton Rd) called Johnny's or maybe it's Jimmy's. Good buffet style food, their fried chicken is outstanding and very reasonable prices. All you can eat!
Cartersville has several good places.
I might be in the minority because many rave about it, but Marietta Diner has not been a good experience in the past. Still packs em in, though.

The buffet is Johnboys, they also usually have a great cobbler on the dessert side. From ECB go back out to main road Canton Hwy/highway 5, take a left onto it, go down about 2 miles and its on the left.
Thank you @PGStaff & @CACO3Girl - Looking forward to trying several of these places. I've put together a list for the team for near our hotel, near LakePoint and near our routes for the different games. I love local food wherever I am and hate to be caught without options because we didn't plan ahead. Our goal is not to eat at a B Wild Wing Cafe this trip. Nothing against that place, but it seems to be the default and there are so many great places to sample. Thanks again!
