Hello ladies... I'm writing this as a last resort. I'm designing my own baseball socks and looking to find some tips on where and what seems to be wearing out the fastest. I know many of you do the laundry for your son and probably see what gets worn or used up. Can anyone shed some light on what you'd like to see, as far as durability goes? What's wearing out and where? (holes, threadbare, elastic, colors, etc) I've played myself for the last three years, but my socks seem to last forever... I guess I'm not all that aggressive. I'd even go to the length of disecting some old socks, but alas, I can't find any for the life of me.
Any help would be appreciatated!

Thank you twotex, that is exactly the type of thing I'm wondering. One thing I have been considering is what would position-specific socks achieve, if anything at all. I know Nike offers this for basketball. This is a tough thing to research as there is virtually no information out there about baseball sock wear. I know pitchers lead off on a certain angle, and that wears out the corner of the cleat... I'm guessing that part of their sock gets similar wear. Ultimately, I'd like to design a sock that lasts longer than others but is still comfortable to wear.
Hope to hear from others...
Interesting topic.
I just asked my MIF son what wears out first and he said, "toes....no, balls, no....."
I reminded him that the top 2" of the sock wears out as well...where he goes to pull them up and his finger goes through the knit! But he can still wear them with holes near the top.
Of course, if he would cut his toenails more often, it would help the toe issue! I really think the toes are the bigger issue.
I do think the thighter the knit the better the quality.

Thanks Keewart for this interesting info. The more I read up, the more it sounds like the toe wears out first. This leads me to think more reinforcement needs to be there. On my own baseball socks, I've had the top elastic go out before anything else, so I know what your son is referring to. May I ask which brand or type of sock does he use? I'm familar with UA's and Twin Cities design and how they are constructed. I hope to get a chance to analyze some used ones more carefully to see where and how the stitching has come apart. Research research research!
Keewartson said the brand he got from his HS was the best....but they are not marked by maker so I will ask in a few weeks when he gets them. From past years, Under Armour were the only pair that had their logo on them (and therefore I can remember which brand) and they held up real well...but he never wanted the logo to show. I will go through the pile of socks to see where the wear is and report back. You want the holey ones?
The ones my high school gave us were made by Twin Cities, which I'm finding out does a lot for schools. Mine wore out fast though, I thought they were thin. Maybe they've improved them recently. The UA's I have now seem pretty good, but I too don't like logos all over the place. This info is good... I'm trying to gather data for this project.
