I always preferred molded cleats because they were lighter and more comfortable. Sometimes the metal spikes that are on the ball of your foot can hurt if you get really low in the primary stance.

He should be able to wear metal spikes on turf if he wants to though. The last two schools I've coached at have a turf field and metal spikes are allowed on them. I bet I've also played on another dozen or so turf fields and wearing metal spikes has never been an issue. Did they specifically tell him not to wear metal or is he just guessing?

Most places are banning them. In fact, in Florence a few years ago they threatened to arrest a manager in the Frontier League because his players were going to wear metal cleats..
I have a buddy who coaches a middle school who shares a turf field with the high school. The middle school cannot wear metal spikes but the high school can. The reasoning is that it helps to limit wear and tear on the field. My buddy thinks in the near future they will ban all metal spikes on the field which is what they initially tried to do. The high school talked them into letting them have metal spikes because visiting teams would only have the metal spikes and not have turf shoes.

I had a catcher a few years ago who went with a coaches turf shoe. He said the metal spikes hurt his feet and the molded cleat just didn't feel right. It never seemed to bother him on grass / dirt or turf. Ultimately it's about comfort.

I started wearing a coaching shoe my junior year of high school for practice. For games, I wore molded cleats.
Go on ebay and type in Mizuno 9 Spike Blast. These are some of the best turf cleats out there. I like them because they are a mid which gives a little more protection. They are very comfortable and come in a lot of color combos. I have used these for years and so has my son when he was playing on turf and at younger ages when they didn't allow metal spikes. Now my daughters are wearing the same thing in fastpitch.
