There is so much information on the web that sometimes (if not most of the time) the information is misleading , outdated or simply wrong so i would like to ask this long winded question.

What are the updated rules of contact for colleges and HS players? Specifically a current Sophomore at this very moment and then once school ends and the student becomes an incoming Junior. I have seen so many contradictory statements that im not sure what the rule actually is, anything from coaches NOT being able to reach out, Coaches being able to send form letters, Coaches being able to respond to contact made by player, NO contact at all allowed  the list goes on and on.

My son has sent out emails to schools he is interested in, has received responses with dialog, received responses telling him he can contact the school once he is a junior (not sure if this means summer or once school starts) and has received no responses from some.

thanks for any insight you can offer. for what its worth im talking mainly about division 3 schools.

In simplest form:

At this point of your son's timeline no direct contact is allowed unless it is on campus or at a camp/clinic being provided off campus.

September 1st of the fall of his junior year he can receive direct emails.

July 1st after his junior year he can receive direct phone calls.

Your son can call at any time but if the coach does not answer the coach can not call back until after that July 1st date.

Edited to add:  This is the D1 timeline.  I think it holds for D2 and D3.  If not someone will correct.

I don't think this is correct.  I believe direct phone contact is not allowed until after July 1st of Sr. Year, unless the player makes the call to coach, or it is from a Service Academy.  This is for D-1.

Go to NCAA.org to do a search.

You also can ask the guidance counselor for a brochure on recruiting guidelines and amateurism for HS students.

i have looked all over the NCAA website and remarkably i cannot find anything regarding emails, phone calls and visits yes but nothing on emails or texts even though they are obviously governed.

I think you are saying the same thing, just phrasing it differently.  I understand it to be July 1 after conclusion of the junior year and prior to the start of senior year, which is what I think you are both saying.

All of the contact rules are contained in Article 13 of the Division Manuals. To download these, go to http://www.ncaapublications.com/ and click on the menu item "Manuals"

The D3 rules are simple:  A D3 coach may telephone or email a prospective student athlete at any time. Off-campus in-person contact can't occur until the junior year is completed.

D2 permits phone calls and off-campus contact anytime after June 15 following the junior year.  Emails and other recruiting material can be sent after June 15 following the sophomore year.

D1 rules are complicated.  The rule (13.1.3) regarding telephone call takes more than 4 pages.  But the short form is: calls are permitted after July 1 following the junior year. Emails on September 1 of the junior year.

For D2 and D3, the recruiting calendars (contact period, quiet period, and dead period) apply.

I'm not going to say anything I think hasn't been said but in simple form....
Prior to September 1 of your junior year, all the contact has to come from you. You can call a coach but they can't return missed calls. You can email them but they can't respond to the email except to inform you they can't by rule respond to your email. They are limited to emails of camp invites our general information about the school. They can talk to you at camps they are running or working or they can talk to you on their campus. On and after September 1 of your junior year they can send you direct emails and can answer emails but they still can't call you or return unanswered calls. They can't text you or answer text but can follow and DM you on Twitter. They can talk to you at camps or on campus during unofficial visits.
Starting July 1 following your junior year they can directly contact you by phone or text. After September 1 of your senior year you can take official visits.

There are quiet and dead periods that apply to the entire process.

Yes, I think you are right.  My mistake...

So to follow up question on this topic - son is also a current sophomore and we are going to visit a D1 school over Spring break.  He emailed the coach and received the response indicated above that they are not able to reply to the email or contact him at this time but could send the recruiting questionnaire and link to their camp.

But we would like to meet with them while we are on campus.  How should we set that up - should we call and hope they answer?  Would hate to just drop by the office unannounced...  thoughts?

You might want to plan to attend one of their home games and email the coach and let him know which game you plan to attend and you have interest in going to school there and play ball.  When we did that on several occasions, we not only got to see and talk with the coaches, the coaches arranged good seating and we watched how they managed the games.

One last thing on this thread to clarify. My son (2016) is going to start sending out introductory emails to schools he is interested in that will be at the California Headfirst and Stanford camps this June. From what i have read he should not be receiving any replies other than replies that state that they cannot talk to him?

Again, he is a Sophomore right now and will be an "incoming junior" starting on May 19th once he graduates.

And on one other note, he is putting together a short video (about 3 minutes) that has some highlights, BP and short little talk about what he wants out of school. he asked me last night if he should add some screen shots of his current grades and class load, Grades from local CC on some College level introductory physics classes he has taken and PSAT scores (has not taken SAT's yet but scored mid 70's on PSAT).  The colleges he is interested in are some top end schools, that being said does a baseball coach actually care about the additional info that much?
