I have not seen this question before.  D3 colleges have tryouts in the fall for Freshman - is there any reason why a Sophomore who DID NOT play  or tryout in their Freshman year could not tryout in the fall for the baseball team?    Or are fall tryouts for Freshman only?  Appreciate any input from all of you.

Can't speak for every D3, but at my son's school, which is a highly competitive D3, fall tryouts appear to be for all comers.

At least judging from last year, during the first week of fall ball,  incoming frosh do try out  as a group, separately from returning players and transfers at first.  After that first week,  some initial cuts happen and then during the remaining weeks of fall ball everybody works out together.   More cuts are made after the annual fall "World Series."

In effect, though,   EVERYBODY is trying out, to some extent, in the fall.  Some returning players will even be cut.  Even some so-called "recruits"  will not make the team.  Recruits include not just brand new frosh, but a  steady stream of transfers -- from JC transfer, to D1 and D2 drop downs, who are all  upperclassmen by definition.

At this school  60 or more guys will be on the initial fall roster. I don't think that's completely unusual, though it may be on the high side.

The process starts  with voluntary but organized player run morning weights, cage sessions, bullpen sessions,  throwing session.  That's followed by official coach run  fall ball.  It culminates in a pre-season  "spring training"  the week before school starts.

In the end about 1/3 or so of the players from fall  will be cut -- with about 30 being rostered  on the varsity and the rest -- mostly frosh -- be assigned to the JV squad.

I gather that one difference  between  D3 and D1 is that the voluntary, player run stuff,  is  open to anybody who intends to try out in the fall,  even players that were not "recruited."   I gather that at  a D1, only the scholarship guys and recruited walk-ons would be doing this stuff together,

At the other extreme,   I know of a school in the Midwest, to which a friend of my son's went, that apparently  already has its roster set, at least according to the team webpage.    The program brought in 10 recruited freshman and has 20 some returning players.   Don't know if they will hold open tryouts or not.

I think this topic - about D3s and the numbers recruited and walking on - has come up quite a few times recently.  I'll try to get a sense from son what it looks like in Sept when official team practices start with the coaches.  As of now there were 13 recruited players at the first meeting with the coaches (on Freshman move in day) and 9 freshman attempting to walk on - per son and his roommate.

I believe all were invited to the player run workouts prior to practice starting.  The only thing son noted was that HC spoke to all the recruited players individually pre/post meeting on first day and did not speak with walk-ons.
