Nobody on, nobody out. 2-2 count, pitch is low and the batter swings and misses. Catcher holds up the ball in his glove and PU verbalizes and signals the batter out. Runner starts to run stops and then jogs to first. Catcher throws down to 3rd. 1st base coach (and head coach) says that the ball was in the dirt and asks the PU to get help. FU signals that the batter is safe. Is this correct? The catcher showed the ball and got a verbal and mechanical out call. How can this get over turned? Reading other threads it seems that the answer is that the players are supposed to know the situation. In this case the catcher showed the ball and after the verbal and mechanic signal threw down to third. Why would the PU even ask for help on this after he had already said he was out? His actions put the defense at a serious disadvantage.
