Hi All

I tried posting this in the college section, but didn't get any responses.

Can anyone share some info on FDU.  Son got contacted by them about coming out for a visit.  Looking for info. on program and coaching staff.  Looks like they have struggled for a while.  Noticed that new coach has been there a few years now.  Always tough to turn a program around.  Are they on the up swing? Is playing time earned?  How is coach with players and team chem.  How is the NE conference, strong, weak, average for that level D1?  How does it compare to the PSAC?  Son has been getting interest from schools in that division too.  Any info. would be great.

Thanks

FDU has two campuses (Florham-Madison is D3) and the Metro (Hackensack) campus is D1. Of the two, the Florham-Madison campus is in a much nicer area. With that being said, the Hackensack campus has seen significant upgrades over the last few years. The baseball field is the Vince Namioli Complex (he was a part owner of Devl Rays). They have a new turf field (though as of August the surrounding facility like spectator area was still a WIP).

I've met Ray Skjold the Asst. Coach - he is a good baseball guy, knows his stuff. Works his a** off for the program from what I can see and have been told. The head coach has been around for awhile. I'm not sure what type of players they are getting. In my area of North Jersey, most of the kids prefer to attend the Florham-Madison campus if they are interested in FDU.

From the looks of the schedule, they are playing other smaller D1 schools like Mt. St. Mary's, Wagner, Lehigh, etc. It's a competitive league no doubt.

hi Soulslam55

Thanks for the info.  Turf field looks great.  Saw it on their web site.  Backstop seems close for college baseball.  Nice for the pitchers.  When you said most of the kids you know go to the other campus is that for academics or baseball?  I believe the other campus is a D3 program.  Would still like to know if they are up and coming or just still struggling along.

Thanks

You are correct, the other campus is D3. I had a couple of friends matriculate at that location (Florham-Madison). It is a more suburban setting and located near a hotspot type town (Morristown).

If you know NJ, big time college baseball is probably not one of the things you mention in the first sentence. I'm not being flip, just the way it is.

FDU (both) has a very good rep as an academic institution. The biggest problem as a D1 in NJ area is that if your going to stay in-state to play football, you pick Rutgers. If it's hoops, it can be Rutgers or you can cross the river to play at Fordham or St. John's. So for D1 baseball, it's a pretty good choice if D1 is your preference. But, IMO, D1 at this type of school can be compared with D2 or D3.

I am fairly confident that FDU's athletic scholarship is probably never going to be 100%; so IMO (once again), the best education your son will receive is paramount. The baseball is a bonus.
