My 2017 son catches a hard-thrower out of the pocket and exactly the top joint of the thumb as he's closing the glove. Yep. That HURT. He sits out practice. Ice and motrin, took him to urgent care for x-rays and thankfully--nothing broken. Total fluke. He's received thousands of full-speed pitches.

First game of the V season was the day after (we won). Everyone is frustrated. He's fighting to get playing time because we have a junior catcher is also a fine catcher. Dr. suggested (and I "concurred") he wear a splint. The next day son tells me it still hurts and asks when will it be better? I'm thinking he can bat and play OF in a few days, but might not catch for a week. Just ordered an All-Star protective glove. The evoshield thumb protector would likely not have helped. All I can say is be patient (to let it heal) and be ready (to play).

One of the best inventions ever for "flukes" because they do happen, especially when you move on to tens of thousands of full speed pitches! Created by a great guy who knows what he is doing.  Can't recommend it highly enough.

Thanks. Trying to order the catchersthumb via paypal but no window opening up make the transaction. I'll try again via Chrome.

My son plays for a, truthfully, mediocre HS program. But we've been moved to a better conference in NOVA. He is a 2017 and is a very experienced and very good catcher. I'm biased, but I believe that is a fair assessment. He just joined a regional showcase team and will be playing at college showcases this summer and fall (including PG events). He's also a superb LH hitter. As for playing time, the 2016 catcher is also very good catcher and hitter. If he was not there my son would be the lock-down starter through his graduation. And vice versa. But, the HC recently told my son that since he hits so well and is only quality LH bat in order, they will try to keep him in the lineup when not catching. I think he'll catch like 40% of innings. Too soon to tell of course.

Need to heal his thumb, and then protect it better, first!

Most of us know that type of injury gets to a point and is a season thing. When that happens batting/hitting the ball is greatly effected.Hopefully the pad/brace makes all the difference.Time off will help.Remember hes involved with what sounds like a great summer operation.Really for now he could just hit.60% with how you descibed things that would suprise me.Your guy is still young. You certainly don't need/want this to be something that ends up being a cronic type thing. Were pulling for your guy to get healthy.

I second this!!!    My son broke his thumb when he was 12...4 weeks before we were leaving for Cooperstown!!  Doctor was a former D1 football player who understood how bad my son wanted to play at Cooperstown.  He said "normally I say 6 weeks...come back the day before you leave for NY and we'll see how it looks".   Went back, got x-rays and he said "it's going to hurt like hell, but you can't hurt it....go ahead and play".   My son has never had a bigger smile.  The first couple swings he took were a little bit "iffy"...but once he hit a ball, realized it wasn't that bad, he was good to go.  He had the catcher's thumb on....while playing IF and batting...and it didn't interfere with either.

The padded glove and the catchers thumb are completely different.  The catchers thumb needs to be molded to your thumb and hardens, similar to the evoshield products (except you can re-heat and remold until you have the most comfortable fit).  The padded glove is just that, has extra padding where you need it.

Update. Almost two weeks and thumb still hurts to close the catcher's glove. SLOWLY getting better. 3 x-ray shots all showed nothing broken. I guess he bruised the bone and sprained it. Fortunately, the catcher's thumb seems to be doing the trick and very little or no pain catching with it. So, I expect he'll be using it until the thumb is 100% or perhaps all the time.
