I'm new here and this will probably be a really stupid post, but do any coaches out there allow players to eat flower seeds while practicing? I generally don't as I think it distracts the kids--trying to reload when they should be paying attention, etc. Our head coach allows it, but it really bugs me. Any thoughts?

Are you ok with them eating them in a game?

If loading some seeds in his mouth is that big a distraction, he likely shouldn't be on the field for the sake of his own safety.  Make sure that kid wears a batting helmet to class.

You should see some of the umpire evaluations I write that reference seeds...

How can sunflower seeds lead to a bad reference (I'm assuming that obviously)

If they have BBQ or Ranch they better be sharing with me or they in trouble.  It's not that big of a deal.  It will become an issue if you make it an issue.  That's not just coaching but teaching and life in general.  If you're running a good practice they will be focused.

I'm just the lowly assistant coach and have my own way of doing things. So, it's probably part of a bigger problem in that our head coach really isn't running good practices.

In the dugout its fine. On the field, not so much.

Yeah--not really the point. The point is what other sport are you allowed to eat while you're practicing? Anyhow, just trying to get other input.

By that token, what other sport are you allowed to eat while you coach?

All sports as well as any profession has it's own nuances.  Guess I've never seen anyone who would literally have issues concentrating or be distracted because they're putting sunflower seeds on their mouth.  If they're not doing it during a pitch, I guess I really don't see it as a big deal.

What other sports do coaches and players chew tobacco, go ballistic in the faces of umpires, throw bats and bases, etc., etc.

My personal input is that if your team is so polished and good that the lowest hanging fruit you can find for improvement is sunflower seeds, then hats off to you.  If not, I'd concentrate on things that will likely make you better in the field first.  The way to becoming "that coach" is to be the guy who bans his team from eating seeds. I mean, c'mon man.

Some great points here.  Pick your battles and make them be the most effective for your team.  Seeds isn't one of them.  If you're comfortable doing so and without blasting your HC what does he do in practice that you don't see as being productive?
