excellent post! I just went to a NY Day party and spoke with a baseball player from a Philadelphia area D1. Asking him about his summers he shared with us his summer baseball league experiences. I then asked if he felt he was missing out on summer internships and on the job experience for post-college and he said almost all that was mentioned in this article. Very impressive and also made sense. 

And you can work at least some of these themes into your resume, which may increase the chances of getting to the interview stage.  My older son included the following on his resume after the education section:

Extracurricular: 

ABC University Varsity Baseball Team Member:          Fall 2006 - Spring 2010

  • Balanced full-time academic course load with the 20-hour weekly commitment of athletic responsibilities, including a 56-game season in the spring

 

No idea if it ever helped, but certainly couldn't have hurt.
