Hurricane for parts of Florida during PG Tournament in Fort Myers...

Wow. just checked on priceline. I have made different reservations for different times based on what day I would get to Fort Myers. Just yesterday morning there were plenty of cheap rooms. Right now, PL has ONE room. $604/night. I reserved there for $54/ night.

Yep, all the coastal residents moving inland a bit.  My mom lives on the water in the panhandle and the hotels 30-50 miles inland from the coast do the same thing whenever a hurricane is heading their way.

Just a thought....if you do go, be sure to confirm your hotel reservation before you leave, have a reservation number, and the name of the person you talked with.  I can see a lot of rooms being bumped to garner the difference between $54 and $604  per night.  It happens.

Maybe double bunk with a teammate and split the $550 upcharge with the manager - or if things get really crazy, double up and offer up the room at the agreed upon $54 for some stranded east coast resident.

There are already a large number of teams in Ft Myers. Several worked out today.  The Chicago Scouts Association team called awhile back asking for a field.

How do we tell those teams that we are now cancelling the event?

We definitely hope that everyone plays it safe.  If they can't make it, we understand and will reschedule accordingly.  Many college recruiters have called to make sure everything is still a go. There are other events taking place on the West Coast of Florida.

We have been monitoring this thing since Monday very closely.  Only today were there any indications of a possible land fall on the East Coast.  Still Ft Myers might be one of the safest places to be in the state. We have been in constant contact with the officials in Ft Myers.

Once again, many of the teams are already here.  We have our staff here.  Wonder how it would go over, if we told them all that we decided to call off the tournament.  Honestly I'm much more worried about the people in the actual Hurricane zones.  

Most important... If you feel there is any danger in attending this event, play it safe and stay home unless you live in an evacuation area.  We are not encouraging anything other than to stay safe.

As of now, we are planning to do the best we can to run a good tournament.  We might get some rain and get behind schedule but that happens a lot. I'm hoping that by Friday all will be well.

Actually it is against the law to do that during or after a storm.   People pay than call Tallahassee lodge a complaint and end up geting the seasona rate (rooms are dirt cheap in October in Florida).

Yeah, I may have jumped the gun. When I looked earlier, there was only the one inflated offering. Looking now, there are plenty of rooms at just a small bump over what they were yesterday morning.

You might take note that PG is also a business. One, in fact, that brings millions of out-of-state money into Florida and puts $$ into the local economy and tax coffers.

To answer your question, there are thousands of people who give a rats ass.  Even many people who live there and businesses that have suffered damage.  The economic impact from that event is very important to many in that area. As of today, we don't even know if playing in Jupiter is possible.  They tell us if they want us to be there.  They tell us if the show goes on!

The same thing holds true for the event in Ft Myers this week.  There are 250 teams and hundreds of college coaches in Ft Myers since yesterday and we plan on having a great tournament.  In fact, there are teams here that are from evacuation zones, they are safe here.  I know for sure that Ft Myers gives a rats ass.

Of course I agree 100%, the main concern is always those affected by the hurricane.  I understand baseball is nowhere near as important as the people affected.  This is terrible, but it could have been much worse.  Hope that continues as the hurricane moves north.  The fact that we are playing right now in Ft Myers, shouldn't mean that we don't care about what is going on elsewhere. We have several people that live in Florida.  We have many friends that live on the east coast.  And if this event was on the east coast you can bet "The Show wouldn't have gone on".  BTW... We have a long history dealing with and adjusting to rain.  We just had a big event that was called off because of a major flood.  

Just an observation on the reaction to the possible effects of the hurricane ...

There are more weather related deaths accountable to snow than any other meteorological or geological event. Yet when a huge blizzard is headed for an area everyone makes fun of people for living there. There's never concern. Roofs cave in from the weight of snow. There can be an after affect of severe flooding due to drains being clogged with snow. There's the potential for flooding in the spring after a heavy snow winter. Businesses close and lose money. But, Ha, Ha, you chose to live there! Followed by the rub in it's 70 and sunny where the poster lives.

Dont take this wrong. But it's 70 and sunny here today and yesterday. And the skies are not cloudy all day.

knock on wood, we almost always have to deal with rain and lightening delays in Florida.

today - 0.00 inches of rain so far, forecast 0.00 rain

tomorrow - Forcast 0.00 inches of rain

Sunday - Forcast 0.00 inches of rain

Monday - Forcast 0.00 inches of rain

Tuesday - Travel day for some, Forcast 0.00 inches of rain

Once again, knock on wood, but if the above holds true, this will be one of best tournaments we have ever held regarding weather.  We were actually planning for some rain today.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday were always supposed to be good.  Can't think of anywhere I'd rather be right now.  Hope that Forcast is correct.

Not sure what the biggest weather disaster would be.  I've seen Florida, both sides after a big hurricane. It's pretty devastating over a large area.  I would think blizzards actually kill more people.  Have lived through 500 year flood. But the most devastating thing I've ever seen so far was the results of an F5 tornado in the Midwest. Absolute leveling everything in its path including a couple of towns.  Believe it or not I think there were only a few deaths.

Haven't experienced anything other than a very small earthquake.  Maybe the worst of all would be a major tsunami.

To me, the most important thing is life!  No matter how much damage is done, nothing is worse than loss of life.

Coming from south florida, I definetly understand your post.  While people are concerned about rain in ft myers ruining the weekend and a possible postponement of Jupiter in a few weeks, there will be a lot of people who will be suffering from losses from this storm, but not in human life, in our country.

That being said, Matthew is not Perfect Games fault.  And yes, the show must and should go on. Business is business, though the business I work for was closed for 2 days and for some thats a lot of money.

The great weather in Ft Myers is because the storm has chased all the bad weather away, so you all can thank Matthew for that!

Hurricanes can be just as devastating as any other major weather event, most are so unpredictable, think Andrew, Sandy. Luckily Matthew was slow enough to give us a chance to prepare. We here in Broward County are very fortunate.

FWIW, Jacksonville Beach is a mess.

We are here in Fort Myers, and the weather was excellent baseball weather today. Sons team got rained out after 2 yesterday and that will be made up tomorrow. I have a home in SC we are still worried about, and I'm sure many people suffered devastation in Florida and the Caribbean with this storm, but I'm sorry, PG did exactly what should've been done! Cancellation would have caused additional economic hardship on the fort Myers area that would have been needless

I'm typing this while sitting in a hotel room in Orlando, waiting to go back home tomorrow, SO, I'm VERY well-aware of people losing things during this storm and MANY others... Thank you very much...

We totally dodged a much bigger bullet when Matthew decided to move off the coast just that few miles, as it could have been MUCH, MUCH worse...

VERY lucky!

Most of the state really dodged a bullet on that storm.  But in the days leading up to it, there was no way to know, forecasts were all over the place, and hurricanes are very unpredictable.  Hope you're getting back to normal Bolts Coach!
