So many great memories of Jose. He was so special.  It was just 6 years ago that he was a PG All American.  Ironically he received the Nick Adenhart award at the All American banquet that year.  He also threw the greatest game ever pitched at the WWBA Championship in Jupiter.

He accomplished so much in his 24 years.  Such a tragedy.  RIP Jose

Clint Hurdle's words about Jose Fernandez....last few are good ones to remember.

“If you use your eyes and ears, there’s reminders throughout your week that life’s short and you don’t call the shots. A sense of gratitude and a sense of joy needs to be more prevalent,” he told reporters (via MLB’s Adam Berry). “In my experience with that young man — I spent three-and-a-half hours with him on a dais at the baseball writers’ dinner in 2013; he was in very close proximity to me — it’s just a tremendously engaging young man. We had a lot of commentary that night.

“Since then, whenever we played them, he’d come up and put his arm around me like he’s an old soul. ‘Hey, papi! How you doing, man?’ When I walked around that corner today, I saw his picture and thought it was another news story. Then I stopped and saw the caption. It took my breath away.”

Hurdle, himself once a can’t-miss baseball phenom, went on.

“It’s just sad. It’s so horribly sad on so many different levels that there’ll be no more of that, there’ll be no more of him, there’ll be no more of that emotion on the mound, that skill-set, that human being, that young man with such a gift, such a great smile.

“I’ve been trying to live that  life for a while now I wasn’t always in that place. It just makes all the more sense when things like this happen. Be where your feet are. Enjoy the moment. There’ll be a day when there won’t be another day.”

BTW do you know why he "only" was drafted 14th?

of course 14th Overall is extremely high but his scouting reports read ridiculous with a lot of 60 and 70 grades.

And then, the news of Arnold Palmer's passing.  A very tough day for sports.

I couldn't help but feel a bit disturbed, though, when the guy from Florida Fish & Wildlife gave the initial press conference.  He made many remarks regarding the loss of Fernandez and his positive contributions to the community (much deserved by all accounts) but barely acknowledged the deaths of the two friends.  Three families lost their loved ones in that incident.

I've owned off shore boats for years.  I'd like to know more about the accident when the time is right.  Maybe save someone else's life.

Go44Dad, according to another friend, there was texting back & forth after midnight...they were at American Social, a sports bar type place...1 guy declined invite to go out on boat, siting not a good idea...So, from the sound of it, drinking was likely involved...and speed... and no lights on boat...and no one wore life vests, though, in this case, it wouldn't have helped. Totally preventable, if common sense had prevailed, imho.

If it is the jetty I think it is, there are no lights and it can be hard to see at night.  The weather has been overcast for days, so it's possible there was less moonlight than usual.

The jetty is adjacent to a deep water cut that cruise ships go through, and in my experience the water can be pretty choppy in that area.  There is also a lot of small boat traffic, so it's impossible to say what impact that could have had on the situation.

The local authorities have said alcohol wasn't a factor, but speed was.  I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to avoid someone else and ended up running into the rocks. It's not uncommon down here,

Your assessment of the area is correct.

WPLG reports that Jose was upset about something and acvording to another friend he declined the invitation as he felt it too late.

Jose was not driving and so far they believe no alcohol was involved however the driver has been cited in the past for driving too fast.

Speed was involved, the boat hit the jetty, flipped and they believe due to injuries they all died immediately.

I dont know how one can prevent an injury like this.  You just dont go out on a boat late at night.

PG - Was he the first winner of the Nick Adenhart award?  Nick was an AFLAC teammate of our older son in 2003.  Jose Fernandez played in the all american game when our younger son's HS coach was the team coach for the West.

Tragic beyond words.

The Perfect Game “Nick Adenhart Award” went to Jose Fernandez who escaped Cuba on a small boat a couple years ago.  The boat capsized in rough seas tossing his mother overboard.  Young Jose dove into the ocean and saved his mother who couldn’t swim.  He is now one of the nation’s top pitching prospects.  The award goes to the player that best exemplifies the spirit, character, and perseverance that Nick Adenhart displayed as a former Aflac All American.  Nick was the starting pitcher for the East Team in the very first Aflac Classic in 2003.

Right!

Sometimes you have to.  I spent a summer commuting via boat. Also did some commercial fishing.  But you don't do it for fun; you do it because you have to, and if you do it you go slow, and  you know where you are.  Not for nothing fishing is listed as the most dangerous job in the USA.

He was one of a good kind.  Couple of former players were talking on MLB radio about how they were always jealous of people like him who seemed to have no worries and really enjoyed life, not concerned about losing their spot or being sent down.  That is what talent and work do for you.

Remember that bat flip and Brian McCann confrontation?  During last night's game one of the announcers said that Redmond talked to Jose about it after the game.  A bit later, Redmond called Fredi to apologize and Fredi said no worries, Jose is down here in our locker room talking with the players.

Boats/water and baseball players:  Ojeda, John Mitchell and Donny Everett all involved in accidents or worse.  And that is just the ones I know of.

An issue with athletes is they sometimes forget they aren't invincible. When my kids went off to college I told them if it's after dark and alcohol is involved, if someone has a great idea, pause and ask yourself if it's really a great idea. What's the downside? Then sometimes, you have to have the emotional strength to deal with peer pressure.
