Lets have a lil fun on projections, we always try to project as youth coaches and so on ,but in this picture they were  a 11u team in 2011 ,they are a mix of class of 2017,18, and 19's . Which one of these kids is   throwing mid to upper 80's ,started as a freshmen , and batted 3rd in on varsity ?image

just saying that projections as youth coaches a lot of time we suck at it , including myself ...

The chubby kid who didn't make the LL all star team was on the mound to clinch an American League pennant. He became a 6'4", 230 pitcher hitting 90+ in the early 80s. For years when we got together he asked me if clinching an AL pennant was anything like being on the mound to clinch a LL state championship.

Ding, mmm1531 your are correct wow, on the first try, the short kid in the back, hes not flipping the bird lol

I was wrong when I first saw this team I thought some of  the others kids were going to do great and get better and faster, they did get bigger ,but bigger doesn't mean fast of stronger or have the passion to be great. i like what consultant says about the 6th tool , and I think that's the big difference , the kids who were bigger at younger ages just peak early  and didn't improve. in fact some of them didn't even make the HS team as a underclassmen and some dont play anymore . and the one you picked was the biggest underdog of all, he use to bat last in the line up never play ss .catcher 3B and only play 3-4 inns a game. But the will to get better and prove everyone wrong has got him to where he is today. Also his dad never listen the naysayers and always encouraged his son up.

that is correct you cant project someone by a picture, but more and more people talk about projections and its all about  size. take Tom Brady for instance, he had to prove everyone wrong. just my 2 cents .

Everyday as adults we are judge or should I say projected to do something good or bad. have a great day.

Question for you: you said an 11U team in 2011 -- that would be 16U in 2016 -- and that it was a "mix of class of 2017,18, and 19's" . . . so was that little guy playing up a level or two?

That's a big deal -- in my experience, people regularly underestimate the impact of age. The fact that he was 10 and hanging with 11 year olds was very predictive of future development.

"But the will to get better and prove everyone wrong has got him to where he is today" .... I love those type of kids.... I could show you a team picture of my son's 12 year old LL tourney team from ten years ago , which would look similar to the team photo above, and ask the same question. The youngest, smallest and least used player on that team just got named to multiple All American teams...

Keep kids in the game, keep them playing, keep them motivated and who knows what you will end up with.

In the prepubescent years a kid may be physically plus or minus three years of his chronological age. So a preteen playing up a year isn't a big deal.

Interesting. There's been analysis showing that what month a kid is born in has a significant impact on the likelihood of the kid going far in a particular sport (e.g, Jan. birthdays in hockey in Canada, which uses a calendar year basis for youth teams). If it's not a big deal, why does it seem to have an impact?

Edited to add: I get what you are saying, but it's a little like saying that a kid can range from being 4 inches shorter than his dad to 4 inches taller than his dad (or whatever the range is across two standard deviations), so therefore the size of the dad is not useful for projecting a player (or size of parents -- but you get the point). I don't think that conclusion follows.
