No specific info about NAPS baseball, but I've had some dealings with the program.

Appointments to NAPS are controlled by Naval Academy admissions; if you apply for an appointment to USNA and do not succeed, you will automatically be considered for NAPS.

Generally, the USNA applicants offered appointments to NAPS have strong desire and potential to be U.S. Navy officers, but aren't quite as well-rounded as they need to be to succeed at USNA. Some need to strengthen their academics; some need to improve their fitness. Many NAPS students offer the Navy something they are looking for and have trouble recruiting:  e.g., top athletes or under-represented minorities with STEM interest.

NAPS exists to produce future USNA midshipmen and USN officers.  Baseball needs to be secondary on your son's priority list for him to have any hope of happiness in the year at NAPS.

Best wishes,

Is he being recruited for baseball at USNA? My son is also applying there but would have to attempt to walk on if he gets in. If he is being recruited it makes it a lot easier.

Curious, who is telling you the prep school is an option?  Baseball coach?

On the contrary, if you're not able to get an appointment it is NOT automatic to be offered a spot to the prep school.  Prep schools are typically offered to previous enlisted trying to get to the Academy but their grades/ACT's need some shoring up. The other candidates for prep school are athletes who are desired by the coach, but also falling short in an academic area.  These are the typical prep school candidates.

PM me with any specifics.  I aid Service Academy candidates in my area (USAFA, USNA, and USMA).  I'm a USAF Academy grad and I can vector you to reliable sources.

Good luck!
