If a school invites player to come and visit like; "We would love to have you come and check things out" how can you tell if that is for an official visit?  Just by asking the coach for clarification or would they be more explicit by naming it an official visit in the invitation?  Do Div 2 schools have official visits or only Div 1?

Another related question, Do official visits include an opportunity for the player to workout with the team at times?

Thanks

An "official" visit where the school picks up expenses is only allowed after the player has started their senior year of high school.  Not really in sync with the realities of todays recruiting timelines.  Many kids have taken unofficial visits at their expense and verbally committed by that time.

So if the player is a 2015 or younger only unofficial visits are allowed right now.

Someone else will have to answer the D2 v. D1 question as I do not know for sure.

As I understand it outside of a scheduled camps the NCAA does not allow for any individual workouts.  Junior Colleges and possibly the NAIA allow such workouts.

Good luck

Edited to add:  So far in observing things with my son and the other players in his summer team most recruiting activity takes place now on unofficial visits based on timing

The rules are a bit different for NCAA Division II compared to Division I.  First off, Division II can offer the recruit a tryout to workout with their team during an official or unofficial visit.  It's not permissible for Division I (except for basketball).  Second, Division II has changed their recruiting timeline and can now offer an official visit as early as June 15 following the sophomore year of high school.
