Haven't seen this covered and may change from year to year for all I know.  I believe that you can have contact with coaches on campus during quiet periods.  I was curious however if it had to be "their" campus.  If son went to see a game at Big State U is it OK for him to talk to the VISITING team coaches if that is who he has been talking/communicating with previously?  Technically it is not their campus but it is "on-campus".  Would you recommend telling the coach you plan on attending the game and would like to say hello?  Thanks

Great question,as I was wondering the same thing now that the baseball season is starting up.

Obviously a prospective recruit can go watch a game, but if they are being recruited by the visiting coach, can they stick around afterward and talk to the coach?

The NCAA rules are so intelligent, it probably means no since it is not the visiting coach's campus.  But then hey, maybe the kid can wave to the coach, point to his phone and then call him and they can talk that way (which seems to be OK by the rules)!

The D1 manual is pretty clear that "A quiet period is a period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the institution’s campus". Not any institution's campus. I would recommend your son let the coach know he's coming to see them play (shows interest), but that he also knows he can't pay him a visit while there... or just leave out the "hello" part altogether.

Ok, quick follow up.  Son has had  contact with a D1 coach (out of state) who will be in town end of March/early April for a series against local D1.  Son had planned on going to game, meeting coach and saying hello etc.  Coach emailed and said other than hello, as visiting team, they are not allowed per NCAA rules, to speak to potential recruits.  Not doubting the coach knows the rules, but that seemed a little strange since it is in a "contact period".  Anyone familiar with this?  Thanks

FriarFred, just an FYI.  Under a strict application of the rules for "contact", even just a simple "hello" between your son and that D1 coach would be an impermissible contact if it is "pre-arranged."  I suggest that your son not be so specific in his communication as to tell the coach in advance something like "I plan to arrive early and introduce myself during your BP prior to game one of the series."

Don't put that coach in a position where the home team coaching staff might report the visiting coach for a recruiting violation right in front of them.  I know that's highly unlikely, but I've seen it happen.
