Perfect Game rating and video

I believe my sons was about 3-4 weeks, but that was in August and I think a much smaller group of kids. 

 

They just posted the reports for the Underclass Main this week.  You can look at calendar but I think that is about 4 weeks post event.

Who actually does the rating? The PG scouts who were at the event or does someone else from PG look at the notes and video and make an evaluation?

Most of the work we do is done after the event is over.  The scout or combination of scouts at the event all turn in a preliminary grade on every player they watch.  All their notes, grades, stats, recorded times, velocity, etc. and other comments are entered into a confidential database.  Then we have staff members go over whatever video we have available and make out a report based on the video alone.  Then all this information goes to one scout that was at the event to establish a short report.  This all goes back and is entered into the database where a couple of our key people establish a final overall grade.  In some cases we will have one scout that disagrees enough with the final grade and makes an argument for a higher grade. Sometimes we change it, sometimes we don.t.  Finally all of this is sent to everyone involved in the process to check over.  Then it gets posted!

 

Sometimes this process takes longer than other times. But the process is always the same. We are not always correct, but we would be wrong a lot more if we rushed the process.  It's like naming an all prospect team at an event. Especially if there is a game attached to the prospect team.  We have to name the players immediately after their last game.  We get the right guys, but we also miss some that had we had more time to check everything over, we would have definitely picked.  So those players didn't get picked at the event, but we do add them to the list later on After we have had time to consider everything.

I know a scout that mentions PG just about every time we talk. Some of that is because PG is so big and when you talk about a good player, PG has already seen them. Sometimes he will pull up a kid from the PG website and begin his conversation. I don't think a good scout would ignore good information regardless of where it came from.

In light of a bunch of PG events recently and waiting for profiles to be posted, I thought I'd bump this conversation.  I found PGStaff's explanation of the process to be helpful and thought others might as well.

Thank you for the thorough explanation on this PGStaff.  I am hopeful that other organizations do something similar.  We are almost to 6 weeks since 2018's PBR Showcase with nothing more than the measurables.  I was beginning to feel that the evaluation would be worthless because it would be pretty darn tough to go back 6 weeks and several showcases to get a real feel for a kid. 

Is this only for PG Showcases?  Or are scouting reports done on every player who attends a tournament event like the PG WWBA?  We just returned from Fort Myers and I was wondering if there's anything else that will be posted in the coming weeks? Or not?

They do take notes, but those notes are not posted on the PG website. However, what they see from a player in PG tournaments does factor into that player's ranking. Which has nothing to do with a player's grade, which is from a showcase.

We are mostly complete with the process with my 2016.  Others opinions and PGStaff may refute but from what I have seen with my son and lots of players I know pretty well, the showcase side of the business and any possible college commitment influences the rankings more than tournament performance.  Just one man's opinion though.

Rankings are based on one thing, that would be our opinion after seeing thousands of players.   Obviously the showcases give us the very best over all view of a player.  We know what he runs, throws, fields, hits, etc.  The rankings have proven time and again to be very accurate.

 

All one has to do is research the old rankings.

 

If we see a player we think is number one at a non PG event we rank him #1.  However the truth is most every top player over the past decade or more has been to a PG Showcase.  Those that have only attended a PG Tournament are sometimes ranked very highly.  There have been nearly 800 from showcases and tournaments that have played in the Big Leagues.

 

We could be, and have been, wrong at times, but that is simply the nature of scouting.  We also were the only one to have Carlos Correa ranked number one in his class. Combining what you see now with what you think you will see years from now is not an exact science.

Hi PGStaff, is there a description or rough guideline of what each PG grade means? For example, does a PG rating of 9.5 means MLB level, 8 means D3, 7 means juco, etc.?
