Son just finished Freshman JV season. Primarily a RHP ... starter and occasional reliever. We've developed a plan to get him stronger (he's 5'10" 115 lbs wet ;-)) and to work on velocity (maxing out ~73-75 currently). We plan to use the workouts in the HTKC book to do both. After a 6 week rest period, we plan to start this up Sept 1.

All that is good, the problem is HS coach strongly encourages all of his boys to come to every fall workout. Miss more than 2 in September, your not invited to October, blah blah blah... NONE of these workouts are pitcher specific (general conditioning). In fact, in season, other than a bullpen occasionally... "hey guys, who needs a bullpen today?" this coach does nothing to develop his pitchers. No long toss, no nothing... Its unfathomable to me...

Coach is a crusty old-timer who does things his way or the highway.

So... any advice on how to go forward? Son just doesn't have time to do both, and the Driveline workouts have scheduled down days after much more intense on days.

As a Dad of HS soph and a coach, I would recommend that he do the same. Speak to coach. If coach will not give him freedom to do some work away from team (uncommon in my experience), then work around the school workouts and don't double up on anything. My son trains outside of school but his trainer does a great job of asking what he has done and then works around it. Experience has been great so far. Trust me, he could experience the same thing in college. I have talked with many college athletes when they return home who are not happy with their training programs and complain that our HS S&C program is better then college program.

General conditioning is supposed to be open to every athlete and can't be mandatory.  Sports specific training isn't allowed, but they can do it on their own...especially pitching since it'll only be a couple of guys away from the others.  If the coach knows nothing about pitching, the guys have to do it on their own.  They need to tell the coach they want to throw a 30-35 pitch bullpen twice a week.  

Good advice on being direct with coach about why/how he's trying to improve in the fall.  Be specific, and if the fall workouts are "mandatory optional", try to work your individual stuff around the team workouts as CoachLD said.

One other side note.  If he's 5'10", 115lbs, potentially doing a strength & conditioning program on top of conditioning with the team, on top of maybe implementing a long toss program as well (personally, I'd focus on long toss and lay off the bullpens for 3 months) - MAKE SURE HE EATS!  Buy and cook chicken breast, brown rice, and potatoes in bulk.  Does your son like olive oil and peanut butter?
