Ok, I'm in position C as base umpire.

Ball hit to SS.  Throw to first is down the line toward home, pulling 1st baseman off the bag (a lot...2ft off bag), and into the path of the baserunner.

Base runner and ball arrive at same time. Ball hits 1B glove, and the two players collide. Nothing malicious, but there is contact. The ball ends up on the ground. I call the runner safe.

Now, I can't assume the catch, and even if he caught it, the play was not completed because the tag wasn't applied and ball control maintained.

Am I wrong?  My fellow ump said he could have been safe I determined the contact caused the ball to come loose, even if it was incidental contact.

This was a varsity high school game, btw

Sounds like a train wreck. Fielder had the ball, runner did nothing illegal. Play on.
