NR over Hickory 5-3 in eight innings.  Blanchard and Gregory in a classic pitchers duel.  Blanchard was up to 87 on the night with his heavy run and sink, while Gregory was up to 91.  Both gave up only one run, in 7 and 6.2 innings respectively.  Both guys were really good.

NR had the bases loaded in the top of the 7th, but a Hickory reliever came in and struck out J. Mayer, who had previously hit a solo HR to tie the game, to get out of the jam.  In the 8th, NR bats got going against the bullpen and put up 4 runs, before Hickory came back and scored 2 of their own.

NR will play Indian River on Wednesday for the right to move on.

What happened to Grassfield?  Who pitched?

Perdue threw.  Gave up 2 hits.

Grassfield could only muster 4 of their own.  I am surprised though.  GF had been swinging the bats better this year than they have in the recent past.  Nonetheless, hard to win, if you can't score a single run.

Can you ask for much more out of your pitcher?  I'm stunned they couldn't put up some runs.  They have been swinging it well the last few weeks, went into regionals HEAVY favorites.   Disappointing for them I'm sure, this was possibly their best chance to make/win states.   Ocean Lakes celebrated, but needs to refocus fast cause Cosby is a perennial power each year and can swing the bats too.

Best chance for both teams that they have had in years!  Both threw their aces last night, but the way Spainhour threw in his last outing, IR has to be confident.  NR offense is very good though, so it should be a good one!  Either way, Tidewater area will be well represented in states by one of these teams!

Grassfield being Grassfield.  As discussed in February they just never hit when it counts.  They have had a parade of DI pitchers go through there but always have this problem when they end up in a battle with a good arm.  They have lost more 2-1, 2-0 or 3-2 type games in big spots than you'd think possible.  It is too bad because it is rare to have two top level pitching prospects and end up getting knocked this soon.

Is the Ocean Lakes kid "a good arm"?  From what I heard, he is a "poor man's Fuqua"!  I am only asking because I know absolutely nothing about Ocean Lakes.

Fuqua?  Has he become the only lefty all the sudden that can throw?  The Ocean Lakes kid tossed a shutout in a regional quarterfinal game.  Give credit where it is due!  I'm saying that in general, not attacking your post. Grassfield has how many all-conference hitters???  Exactly, a ton. So it's not like they don't have an offense.  They lost, at home, and got shut out.   Kudos to Ocean Lakes and the "poor mans" whatever!  Kid deserves to be praised.

1) I am simply asking..."does anyone know anything about the player?"  I have heard what I have heard, but am simply asking if anyone actually knows anything about him.  In other words, I have heard 'X', but there has to be more to the kid than that.  So, mine was not a negative post.  I am genuinely curious as to what kind of player just shut out Grassfield.  Is he committed to pitch at the next level?  Has he been that good all year?

2) As Luv has pointed out, GF has not been known to be an offensive powerhouse for quite some time.  While I truly believe that they were better this year, I wouldn't say that they have a "complete lineup".  Of course, this has been my position for many months now.

3) Ocean Lakes has kind of come out of nowhere.  They were not FC or Kellam, or even Cox for half the season.  Further, the Beach has been down, in general, as both GF and WB advanced to regionals over Beach teams, (with WB handling FC) as did HH and IR.  So, a pitcher who is not a household name (does not mean he any less talented), from a program that has risen from a beaten down district, beating one of the top teams in the State...I think the questions are rather fair.

Hylton had chances to score. Put two on in the third and fourth innings but ended each threat with a flyout.  In the seventh, Fox Semones (#2) doubled into the right field corner, and Blake Coleman (#10)  singled through the 5/6 hole to produce the game's only run.

WB put a runner on in the bottom of the inning, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the threat, inning and game.

Congrats to each team on a successful season.

Grassfield didn't fall apart.  They simply took too many good pitches.  A few times, I know the TAKE sign was given by the coach.  Others, the hitter did not swing.  Either way, let's not build Grassfield into an offensive juggernaut.  The bottom part of their lineup was very weak, which explains the failed attempt of a straight steal of home.

The OL pitcher was scrappy but very hittable, especially in the last half of the game.

Actually, Western Branch and Indian River advanced past first round and lost in Semifinals.  I wouldn't consider it a DOWN year.

During this past Spring Break tournament in Virginia Beach, Indian River defeated Mills Godwin handily, with Mason pitching for Godwin, despite River's 7 errors. It helped to have Fuqua throw 10Ks. Gotta go with senior-laden Nansemond River as the favorite to bring a 2016 State Championship to the SED.

Mt. View will field six senior starters all committed to DI and DII schools -- not going to say they will win it but they certainly cannot be overlooked.  If there ever was a team of Destiny it could be them though -- they have won seven one run games this spring!  Potomac is no slouch either as they bring a handful of commits (Alex Burke can hit and pitch with anyone in the state) and some scrappy hitters to the mix...if they are allowed to "hang around" it could spell trouble for an opponent.
