runner on first takes off for second a bit too early just before pitcher throws pick off to first.  First baseman throws toward second base but the ball hits the baserunner and bounces away.  Runner is safe at second.  50/50 chance a good throw would have gotten baserunner.  Hard to judge.  So, an error on first baseman, or a stolen base?  Runner did not advance to third, so I simply scored it a stolen base.  Thanks for your help!

We don't often charge either fielder with an error when a throw that needs to be completed with a tag play results in the runner being safe at that base but no further advances by any runners, even if the throw is awry or a good throw is dropped.

I reserve the right to change my mind when one of our community weighs in with an authoritative reference, but until then, I'll call it a stolen base.
