A few years ago while visiting the NY Yankees in Tampa I visited with Mark Newman, V-President and we discuss the two difficult areas for pro scouts. "To scout the bat" and the heart [6th tool].

We both turned to the 40 man roster blackboard and pointed to one name DEREK JETER!

Later, I proposed a plan to assist Yankee scouts the bat and the heart.

When we travel Internationally we can determine the bat and the 6th tool. 12 games in 15 days against the National teams of Japan, Korea, Australia with MLB scouts as coaches.

My recommendations for players considering a pro career from HS, go to a minor league game and talk with the players. "Would you do it again"?  A great term paper.

Follow up -- the kid has moved up the board since I posted this, apparently on the strength of his performance during the HS season, which is interesting as well, and is now considered to be a likely first rounder.  If that does happen, I'm told he'll sign.  So looks like those of you who said clubs have to do their due diligence on committed kids are correct.
