Good stuff Goosegg, it really is a very realistic view of cost of living in milb ball. In AAA, although a bit more pocket change, lots of guys have young families already, now that is tough. Thats why guys still play for free agency, could mean a lot more money.

One other thing to remember is that the cost of living is different everywhere.  I remember when son was living in West Palm in high A, things were more expensive then in AA Springfield, MO.  More expensive in Memphis, TN but meals get better as you move up, and so does more money for club dues.

The per diem is for meal money for road trips. It was at one time 20 per day, now 25. Most can make that work, with money to use when they get home. All you can eat is the first place they look for when they get to town.

I don't think if son had not made a 40 roster for a season and for the Arizona Fall league, played in WBC and had nice card deals when drafted he would have wanted to take more money out of the bank. He had a nice bonus, but if you do not watch your budget, it goes quickly.

The more I read of these stories the more I understand the value of getting a degree that will pay a decent salary out of college.  The military academies would be a good route because at least you get a full ride if you go on a sports scholarship and also receive a monthly stipend.

Statistically most will wash out of the minors and never glimpse the MLB.

I'm wondering what the minimum sign on bonus would be needed to survive in the minors for at least 5 yrs for a kid right out of HS?
