My 2015 good size catcher has gotten interest from small to mid D1 as well as D2 programs. Through email and phone call coaches have expressed their interest. Some have come to see his play on one or more occasion.  A couple of coaches have called him just to see what is up and feed him all the right lines. “We hear good things about you” “ like your play” “one of our coaches has seen you play a couple of times and like what they see” only later when follow up they do not respond but days later they follow up with a call again.  How do we sort out what has substance?  It is frustrating for a 17 year old to say the least.

There is one particular program that had mentioned “you are ONE of our main guys” They have seen him play one time and have tried to see him play again but have not been able to. They now want him to come to their camp. Is this real interest or a revenue play?

As you sort through the process make sure you find some answers to these questions.

Where does he want to go to school?  Make a list that includes dream schools, middle of the road schools, and schools he can go to if all else.  Base this list off of academic major desired, location, his comfort level of the campus atmosphere, and lastly the baseball program.

Investigate the desired programs and the programs talking to him.  Do they have an immediate need for his position?  Will he sit for a year or two?  How well do they develop their players for the next level?

Keep doing your homework and prepare for the opportunities that open up.  Don't write anyone off just yet.

Have your son ask the coach more questions about the camp to determine if it s a prospect camp or money maker.   If it is a school he would seriously consider anyway, why not go?  It sounds like they are making an effort to see him, but want to see him again to make a decision.   This is normal.   Would you buy a house or car without looking at it more than once?  ;-)

My oldest son attended a showcase where he drew the attention of a few colleges. Each college called or emailed and requested he attend a prospect camp at their school to get another look at him.  He attended the first school (8 hours away), and they offered him at the camp.  I'm oversimplifying this a little bit.  But I think if you know what kind of camp it is, show genuine interest, perform well, then you increase your chances significantly.  Good luck.
