Awww.  Thats so nice of you infielddad.  We did see this article on Sunday and were pretty overwhelmed by such nice comments from his coach.  Puts some tears in my eyes to be honest.  Its the kind of stuff you hope your child's teachers and coaches think about him.

 

But did his coach, more or less, call us geeks/nerds?  ..........

 

Anyways, just a correction to one thing you wrote - he is not on the verge of tying Lincecum for wins.  Outside chance he could get there by year's end, but its a longshot.  He is getting close to Timmy's neighborhood on some other things, but wins and even moreso, strikeouts aren't likely.

 

But whats the best part of all?  One assignment to go, should be turned in tomorrow and he'll be a college graduate in Econ! 

 

All I can say is 'thank you' to the many...and I mean many coaches and friends who helped along the way.  Especially Coach Hutton at Archbishop Mitty HS in San Jose as well as Rob Bruno from NorCal Baseball and Dave Nakama (now HC at SJSU) who kinda put his neck on the line with his boss at UW and recruited him there when he was an asst. coach at UW.  They all 'figured him out' when others didn't.  And to your son as well infielddad - who coached his travel team a little at age 15 and gave me some confidence that he could indeed play D1 baseball. 

Congrats JBB and thanks to ID for posting.  As the parent of an undersized RHP (hopefully you don't take issue with my choice of words), I love reading posts like these!!!  I'm talking about the engineering degree every bit as much as the athletic accomplishments.

Really wonderful to see!!! Way to go, Tyler!!! Know the entire Davis Family is justifiably proud.!

Now I have something to add to the story...

 

Our college writers put together a preseason All American team (list).  I always look at those things but to be honest, once kids get to college I become more of a fan than anything else.  So I saw all the recognizable names and didn't really pay much attention or think about who might have been left off the list

 

Within about 24 hours of that list being published I got an email.  I can't find it right now, but basically it scolded us for over looking Tyler Davis.  It was polite enough, but that person sure made some good points. We get lots of emails from people complaining about someone being over looked.  So at first I didn't pay very close attention to who sent the email or even who the player was.  I just kind of shrugged it off and said oh shit, here's another one, before putting two and two together.

 

Every year we invite a couple of the very best HS coaches in the country to coach our All American teams in the nationally televised game.  A few years ago we invited a great coach from Northern California by the name of Bill Hutton.  Bill really impressed me with his knowledge and not only his passion for the game, but his passion towards the young players.  In other words, he made it very clear how much he cared!  That week I grew to really respect this coach. I enjoyed talking to him because he really knows the game and he is just one of the good guys.

 

So back to this email scolding us that we screwed up.  You guessed it... Came straight from Tyler Davis' former high school coach, Bill Hutton! And you know what? My respect for Bill went up a few more degrees.  Think about it... How many former HS coaches would ever care that much? You can be nice, polite, intelligent, talented, etc., but nothing in the world is more important than "caring"

 

We at PG are much more familiar with Tyler's older brother.  It has been fun discussing topics here at HSBBW with their dad for many years now.  I think there is a very special kid pitching college baseball in Washington. And their is a very special HS coach in California.  And of course this all involves a very special family!

Marklaker, Tyler is a wonderful story for every RHP like your son. 

What is hard for me to convey through words is what a nice person he is when he is off the mound and the ferocious competitor he is on it.  That was how the college coaches I talked with described his demeanor on the mound: he was/is ferocious in a way which would be so hard to pick up if you talk with him in street clothes.

Also, Tyler broke the engineering mold: he is an econ guy who was accepted into the top econ program at UW and finished early...with darn  good grades!

 

This is from the UW site and gives a clear direct glimpse into what I tried to say:

 

"Why do you love baseball:
For the competition and the camaraderie, and to win every battle."

Tyler is a great young man.  Always has been.  The Davis family is off the charts "good people."

 

Thanks for tying all this together Jerry and Tom.  I am happy to be a link in the chain.  I have not been on this site in a long time just due to the crazy nature of my life.  Great to reconnect and hopefully help others.

 

And I will forever be in debt to Jerry (and I assume with some help from Kevin Christman) for allowing me to experience the AFLAC game in 2010.  What a memorable experience!!! Some of those guys are about to make Big League clubs, including Daniel Norris, who is in the news for living in his van.

 

The rest of the Pac-12 had their chances with Tyler. Dave Nakama rolled the dice and should be given a ton of credit for pushing for Tyler.

 

But Tyler should get the lion's share of the credit.  He did it himself!!!!  Great freshmen year under the radar.  Not great sophomore.  Could have been the end of the road, but he made the adjustments and had the great junior year and it has carried over.

 

Plus he is helping my 2nd Grade son with his "Flat Stanley" project.  We are excited to see where Tyler took Flat Stanley, hopefully to UCLA this weekend!!

How great to have you post in this thread.

What an incredible impact you have had with the students, baseball players and the baseball program at Mitty HS.  Congratulations on everything you have done and, as PG poignantly posted, for caring so much about your players, their futures and about HS baseball in Northern CA.

What an incredible void your recent, but very well deserved, retirement announcement will leave for so many in the Bay Area. Your accolades have been "earned" by hard work and plenty of emotional effort, and every accolade is so richly deserved.

From a parent who watched and observed from afar, one accolade which might not get the recognition it truly deserves is the fact that over many years, you subscribed to and demonstrated that winning and ethics in HS baseball and coaching can, should and do work together.

The footprint of coaching HS baseball is bigger and better because of Bill Hutton!

Wow! This is an incredible thread -- I don't know the Davis family or Coach Hutton, but after reading this thread, I wish I did! Congrats to Tyler and the Davis family, this is really nice to read.

I have known Tom Davis for maybe 12-13 years?  Its been great to share his and Gloria's ride with their sons.  

However, its been so much fun to watch this young man grow up, and FWIW I think he is a far better college pitcher than my son was ever, and I wish him the best.  He deserves the opportunity to prove that you don't have to be over 6ft or throw mid 90's to be a good pitcher.

When you have great families with great kids and put that together with a great coach the results tend to be GREAT!   And it was!!!

My son was a teammate of Tyler's (2 years ahead of him) on Coach Hut's varsity team.  Watching Tyler play and along with Hut's other great players was a real pleasure, nothing less pleasurable was visiting with player families like the Davis's.  Time went buy way too fast, but there's a lot of great memories including the 2010 team that was listed a the nation's #1 team that year and I do feel that probably wouldn't have happened not for Tyler's contribution and the coaching that came from Hut.  It was always a wonder to watch what's generally considered an undersized pitcher with average velocity cause havoc with hitters as he would mix up his pitches and hit his spots with great consistency; being another example that you don't have to have high velocity to be an effective pitcher.   My wife and I have retired to Arizona, but when University of Washington in the area, I make sure I get to the game Tyler will be pitching in to watch him do his magic.  And last year it was my pleasure to chat with him again as the team hung around before their game.  

 

Now I'm hoping that with this year's draft, Tyler will be drafted to a Cactus League team that I might see more of him during spring training.

One of the hard parts for me to believe in this story is that Tyler is a senior.  It seems like yesterday he started his career at U-Dub.  Thanks for posting infielddad and best wishes for Tyler, ED, and family in the future.

What an honor to have parents, coaches and friends speaking so highly of a player. Success on the field or in the classroom is what we all hope for our children. So many kids are doing their part, but to have the baseball community shouting out how great of an all around kid this is......that's what we hope for, that they get the most out of themselves and make an impact on the world around them. Good job.
