Whenever I try to get across how bad calls by umpires on pitches not swung at affect the game as a reason games at the ML level should be called using technology, I’ve never really tried to dig up any real proof. Well, the attached is a pictorial presentation of an at bat that took place in the Boston/NY wild card game.

If technology were calling pitches not swung at, the 6th pitch would never have been thrown because the batter would have been called out on the 5th pitch. The 6th pitch is the ball Gregorius hit out in the 1st inning for a 3 run HR and tied the game at 3-3.

The electronic strike zone you see on tv is not accurate. It’s the same size for a 6’2” hitter as a 5’10” hitter. It also gets fooled by pitches than don’t enter the strike zone until it’s by the hitter and hits the back exposure of the ray. It reminds of when as kids in the driveway the pitch wasn’t a strike but managed to hit the strike zone square on the garage door.

In order to even consider an electronic strike zone it would have to be adjustable in a couple of seconds between hitters.

How high?

BTW: Even though this year the Sox got taken out of a bases loaded inning no outs by some questionable strike calls - I'm fine with the human zone.

Swing at strikes and you won't have to worry about that borderline 3rd one... Don't swing at crap at your eyes or that bounces around 58' and then complain about that borderline 3rd one...

And thank you very little for taking the bait

I’m fine with the human zone too, unless there’s something better available. Right now there isn’t for levels below MLB, but for MLB there is, and a lot more people are becoming convinced that the arguments against it don’t make sense.

What bait did hsbaseball101 take?
