My son redshirted as a freshman at a D1 school.  He transferred last season to a D2 school and did very well.  He is a redshirt soph. this year.  He will graduate next spring as a redshirt junior athletically.  Can he transfer to a D1 school as a grad student to finish his last year of eligibility or is he tied into finishing where he is.  I guess the question I am asking is has he used up his one time transfer option or does that count since he will be graduating.  Any help would be appreciated and I'm definitely not saying anything bad about his present D2 school.  Great school, great baseball program, but son still has a lifelong dream of being a D1 player at some point.

He transferred from the D1 (a four year school) to the D2.  The one-time transfer exception is no longer available to him because, well, it would be a second transfer from a 4 year school.  14.5.5.2.10(b)

So if he transfers, he'll need to serve a year in residence before being eligible at a D1  14.6.   However, if I have understood your post correctly, he can't play at all at a D1, because his 5 year calendar period of eligibility will expire by the time he serves a year in residence.
