Ok, I think I am following your logic better.  Your point is that bec the coach is not playing to win and that JV is a "development team/league", then it's no different from you or your son making decisions that is best for himself but not for the team.

I think you are wrongly and incorrectly equating that "not playing to win" is the same as "not doing what's best for the team".  The coach may make decisions that may not put the team in the best position to win now, but will develop the team for success later on (maybe later on in the JV season or maybe even for the varsity season).  But whatever he is doing is still what's best for the team.  Within the context of what the coach is trying to do, all of the players should be doing whatever they can do that is best for the team, not for themselves.  Even if the coach is not playing to win that game, when you are at 3-1 count at the bottom of the lineup with the chance to turn the lineup over, you take the walk.  Even you have already acknowledge (a few pages ago) that the walk is what's best for the team.

Now, when it comes to showcase baseball, not sure how that works.  The point of showcasing is to show individual's skill set.  Would the decision, considerations and expectations be different then?

hmmm...the parallel is less about "playing to win" and more about player development.  Was the best opportunity for the player to develop to practice putting that ball in play on a 3-1 strike with runners in scoring position.  Training him to produce RBI.   Even if it was an out it had a good chance of bringing in the run or was the player best developed by standing there and doing nothing...

I think the player was best developed taking a pitch that was, in your words, "borderline".  Learning the strike zone, and laying off pitches that are borderline, or hard to handle is a heck of a lot more than "just standing there doing nothing".

In a completely unrelated topic & in an effort to get to 7 pages, allow me to add this. So last night we are slated to play a makeup game from a rainout (away game). We get there & all good. Everyone takes BP, IF, Pitchers get loose & we are set for 6 PM start. Problem is that there are no umpires. Everyone standing around & finally after much debate & confused coach conversation, we are told to pack it up & go home. No game! I'm not kidding!

Thank you for you contribution to this thread.  Please don't discount the relevancy of your post as it appears everyone showed with an intent to help their team win.  I applaude each and every player for taking BP and all those pitchers who got loose.  I do think, however, that this may have been a good opportunity for the players to make their own calls - or maybe have them all start out with a 3-1 count with runners on and see how they respond.

Just across the wire: "Tim Tebow demoted to A ball." Sources say team management noted his unwillingness to be aggressive on borderline 3-1 pitches with runners in scoring position as a contributing factor in decision....

What makes this funny is.....if you don't think that is true...you are CRAZY!  I can just picture the conversation in the clubhouse with the GM...."but sir, I know I keep leaving runners in scoring position...but I draw walks so other people can get RBI.  I think you should move me up the bigs....

For some reason I keep getting these updates.   Anyway, let me help get this "Golden" thread to 7 pages.

The kid could do what's best for the team AND what's best for his own development as a player by dumping his narcissistic and desperate dad who not only counsels his kid to swing at borderline pitches against a JV pitcher, who may well give him a bomb worthy ball on the next pitch, but runs off to an internet site to tell the world about this 3-1 pitch in a JV game and then proceed keep us holding our collective breath until we get our next exciting update from thrilling world of Connecticut Junior Varsity action.

Does anyone have an update on that dastardly millennial, Christian, baseball interloper Tim Tebow?

This thread won’t make Golden series. For this thread to be memorialized the site needs to start a WTF series.

Way to go guys - everyone should be proud because we did it.  We reached 7 pages.  Now let's enjoy it a little bit but we need to get back to work.  I'm saying it because I know we can do it.    Let's go for 8 pages

The least you could do would be to "reply with quote".  You really need to grab one that has maybe 3-4 attached quotes if you want to make real headway.

Also pay attention to your spacing.

Sometimes.... Well.... Never mind...

Swing Rate percentage and BABIP plus wOBA might be a good way to set a lineup but then we'd need math teachers as baseball coaches

And to be fair, let's talk about weighted on base average (wOBA).  Is a Grand Slam in a tight ballgame truly equal to a solo shot HR in a blowout?  Can we factor wind blowing out vs blowing in within the parameters of wOBA?

You seem to think batting in many different batting positions is somehow a problem. I ran the batting positions and how many games each player hit in them for all of the HSV hitters I’ve scored for since 2007 in the spring season. Please see attachment. As you can see, batting in many different batting positions is the norm.

If only the kid had swung at that 3-1 pitch and hit it. This thread would be non-existent.... My son had a game last night, bottom of the 7th, bases loaded, down by 3. He hits a liner down the line for a double scoring 2. The problem is the weather has been cool and wet causing the grass to grow very fast. The outfield grass was tall and slowed the ball down. He was robbed of a game tying triple due to the length of grass. Should I have called the parks department the day before to ask them to mow the grass? The triple would have helped both the team and his own stats.

Call the day before?  Heck no - that would be something along the lines of preparing ahead of time.  What you need to do is complain - after the fact - that your son got robbed of the headlines and maybe some recruiting exposure.  That way, if things don't turn out exactly how you like a few years down the road, you can always point to that "miserable field that hadn't been cut in 2 weeks" (don't make mention of any possible benefit to your son's team resulting from that same tall grass).  I know it sounds like a weak excuse for things not panning out, but better to have a weak excuse then none at all.

Hmm... I never thought of doing that.

However, I have always found that umpires are always very happy to listen to constructive criticism of the pitches and plays they missed out in the parking lot after a game, so it's probably a good idea.

The only conclusion I can draw from this is you need to be a more realistic parent and less needy.  I find it sad you would need to post on a message board that your son "hit a liner" to gain some kind of validation from the masses on this board,  Let's be frank, your son is clearly not very fast and without the necessary speed no college will be interested him to play baseball and it is entirely possible his life will be a failure.

Oh...and best of luck to you son!

It’s the off season and this is like a bad car wreck.....can’t turn away, but you know you should.

Wow. I finally made it to the end.

I would like to thank everyone for the chuckles induced with my morning coffee on this rainy Sunday morning. My compliments to the OP for joining the satire fun by the end.

There was just the right sprinkling of Seinfeld, Tebow and quality one-liners throughout these seven pages.

My only sadness is Tim the Enchanter has not offered his insight.
