I watched them play this weekend.  They swing the bats very well and are having a pretty good season at 14-9 and 7-7 in the ODAC.  Pretty typical year as they usually seem to be within a few games of .500.  Just checked the history page and the current coach's record is .504 and he has been there 28 years.  Very old school type guy.  I have not been on the field in a long time but hear that it is a top-notch D3 place to play.

Yes it is a small private school in VA.  I think the average SAT on the team is 1400 and if you pay full tuition and fees it will run you $60,000+.  Interesting that they have as many kids on the roster from GA (4) as from VA.

Yes, and their FA office is a pain in the buttocks.  If you can get any info from them you are a better man than I and you should consider a career in espionage.  I hope things are going well for your son this season.

They are making the SAT writing optional in 2016.  Wattsboro may have been jumping the gun a bit.  ;-)

Washington & Lee is 1 of many fantastic D3 schools we visit on our VA College Bus Tour.

But I have a little more insight on W&L because my wife is a grad.

In a word.  Awesome.

Toughest school in the state to get into.  I see kids routinely denied there that are accepted at other great schools in VA.  Its really more about numbers vs smart or not smart.  The are an ELITE education with very FEW spots to fill each year.

Most D3's have a "retail" cost and "real" cost.  Unfortunately, most kids will pay pretty darn close to the retail price at W&L.  The vibe from admissions feels like, "not smart enough to get in, someone else is.  Can't afford it, someone else can."  And they can get away with that type of approach because of how small and elite they are academically.

Coach Stickley is awesome.  Old school in the best way.

His recruiting talk is simple.  "Get yourself into school.  We'll see you in September."

Every student at W&L is there because they earned their way in through admissions.  The number 1 QB recruit in the country could want to go to W&L but if he gets in it is because of his grades, not his arm.  I'll repeat this, EVERY KID at W&L belongs there and EARNED their way in.  And every kid knows it.  There is no animosity toward a basketball player or running back because they EARNED their way in.

Facilities are beautiful.  As is their entire campus.  Their playing surface is 2nd to none.  Plus they have a little built in "stadium" seating section.  Indoor area with cages and mounds built into hill attached to home dugout.

Campus borders the campus of Virginia Military Institute but there is very little if no interaction between student bodies simply because of the rigorous schedule of the VMI kids.

The town of Lexington is very much "small town" America.  Couple of nice restaurants.  Couple of bars.  Couple of hotels.  Several B&B's.  Walmart down the road.  Most students socialize amongst themselves at house parties and bon fires.  Along with having a "southern preppy" reputation, the "southern" part sticks out.  Because they are situated in the mountains their students tend to be very out doors oriented.  Lots of hiking, biking, kayaking & climbing very close by.

W&L is one of a few schools where studying abroad is accepted and sort of even encouraged for ALL students.  Definitely something I missed out on as a D1 player.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out directly.  I know several players up there and would be happy to put you in touch.

Be sure to check out our College Bus Tour info.  In addition to the VA & NC tours we are offering 2 High Academic Tours.  If W&L is on your radar then you'd probably want to check out the list of schools on those trips too.

There are pics of last years trip on my website.

Good luck.

Rich
