I didnt want to hijack the other thread about grades but I was just wondering what GPA is usually required to stay academically eligible to play? I think I read that the NCAA rule requires a 2.3 but do most coaches or schools require higher? My son will be at a D1 next year and his coach told him he requires at least a 3.0. This is fine with me because thats the minimum my son needs to maintain to keep the academic portion of his scholarship. He also makes them take 30 credits a year 18 in fall 12 in spring to ensure they graduate on time. He said he is strict with this but keeps on top of them. They have mandatory study halls with the team, if a kid says they are having trouble in a class he will get them help, and he makes them get progress reports from their professors mid semester. I just happened to be talking with another mom whose son is at a D2 and he ended with a 2.4 gpa his 1st semester, but he is fine and able to play. His coach never asks about their grades. So just wondering what is typical, and are there differences between the divisions?

My son is at a high academic D1.  He  must achieve a 2.0 overall, in his major, and in basic requirement classes to graduate.  I haven't heard from him that the coach requires otherwise.  He is also provided with tutors if needed and mandatory study hall as freshman (and for later years if needed/required).

I got this from the NCAA website:

What are the Division I grade-point average requirements to remain eligible?

Student-athletes must achieve 90 percent of the institution’s minimum overall grade-point average necessary to graduate (for example, 1.8) by the beginning of year two, 95 percent of the minimum GPA (1.9) by year three and 100 percent (2.0) by year four.

baseballmomx4, keewart has shared the basic NCAA rule with you, which is a great starting point.  In addition, some Division I conferences may have a requirement that is a bit more strict than the NCAA.  (So, for example, 2.00, regardless of the examples of 1.8 or 1.9 as in what keewart pulled from the NCAA site.)

I often tell parents that Division I athletes should think of 2.600 as the GPA minimum.  This article from our website explains why:

basebaseballmomx4,

The div 1 coach sounds a lot like my sons D1 HC.  Very strict about going to class as well as maintaining a GPA above the NCAA requirement.  I think his goal was and still is 3.0 per the team. Besides turning out a 500 team its also the HC job to make sure that his players graduate on time.

Its good to be strict, and most successful D1 coaches are because of the standards that they expect from their players.

D1 athletes are required first semester mandatory study hall, I believe it is 20 hours a week.  After they prove themselves they do not have to attend, but it is left up to the coaches discretion to send them back. They dont like it but they get their work done.

Its all good!!!

Thanks TPM. I like the coach and that he wants them to do well academically.  I really like the mandatory study hall as well.. My son keeps saying he will be fine, but I really don't think he really grasps yet how much time is involved. Study hall would take some of the time management issue out of his hands.  One of his friends came over during the break after his 1st semester away. Poor kid looked like he had been put through the ringer.
