I was talking to a local HS coach who has a state title under his belt and  since we were  at the same showcase we notice the same thing , during the HR derby the 13- 16yr olds were blasting 400 plus bombs into bleachers, he was like there's no way these kids should be hitting that far, for the size some of the kids had on them, note, it was open bat  so they can use whatever they wanted.

which leads me to this ,that during the All American  game , those same kids who were hitting bombs during the derby couldn't  get the ball out of the infield , and to make it worst some tried using wood and they looked very bad.

HE also told me the year he won state, he had a stud SR prospect who was hitting bombs, and the Reds were interested in the kid,  so the scouts showed up one day with 2 woods bats, and said here we want to see you hit with these, not the metal, the kid did good and is with the Reds in the minors now.

but makes me think that $400 bat is sometimes a illusion .

I have way too many things to discuss on that topic to post on a forum.  It would probably take 6-8 beers and 6 hours to get through a good chunk of the subject.  I have played at the start of the metal bat era and coached baseball through the stupid hot composite bat era and just had a glimpse of BESR HS bats.  Very broad subject, but yes wood can be just as hot as today BBCOR bats, and most of the time would be very humbling to a batter using a pre bbcor bat.  Even wood vs BBCOR,  most high end BBCOR bats do not give you feedback on whether you are in the center of the sweet spot since the sweet spot is stupidly large.

I'll take you up on the beers.

My son was a D1 PO this past season.  He did take BP last winter and got 5 or 6 AB's this spring as a DH/Pinch Hitter....but really didn't see any live pitching other than the few AB's from January on.  This summer he's playing on a college summer team in a wood bat league.  Got to play 3B the first game due to guys not being here.  First AB....first pitch....double off the fence.  2nd AB....1st pitch....HR over left center field fence.   I don't think it's the bat as much as the swing.    He's hoping to get a shot at playing some IF this fall and see if he can turn it into more AB's come next spring

I know that it is important to get BBCOR and Wood into the hands of kids as soon as possible.   I see a lot of 8th graders in 14U still using Drop 10's and Drop 8's and they are in for a world of hurt as freshman if they didn't take the time to get used to Drop 3's

I agree , my son started using bbcor in 6th grade cuz our district requires it ,made a world of difference  since he still used it in travel , while everyone else used drop-10s

his balls weren't going as far then , but now so much bat speed and flight on the ball , and hit for power with wood ..
