A come from behind story and how it never ends until the end:

Last year, keewartson's midmajor D1 struggled to be the 6th seed in Conference play, out of 6 teams selected to go.  They lost two and came home.

This year as #2 seed, they lost their first game which sent them directly to the loosers bracket. They won the next game, which forced them to face the first team again....and they won, which sent them to the championship game.  They would now have to beat the reigning championship team not once, but twice, since that team had not yet lost in conference play.

In the first championship game, it starts to rain.  Hard.  Tropical Storm Bonnie has settled in and it doesn't look like she is going anywhere soon.  After son's team earns 7 runs in the 9th inning to tie the game, the game is called due to weather.

Since the opposing team was seeded #1, they would win the conference title by default if the game ends in a tie.  However, the next morning it was decided to unroll the tarps, tend the field, and resume play.  New ballgame!

After 3 more innings with no score, son hits a solo HR to win the game.  Right on to championship game #2, which is the 5th game for us, and 4th for them.

There is back and forth scoring with the opposing team getting the go ahead run in T8.  With two outs, and bases loaded, one of our seniors comes up to bat, with tears in his eyes, knowing that this could be his last ever at bat.  One of his teammates tells him, well, don't let it be.  He then swings for the fences and it goes.... and goes..... and goes.....OVER!  Grand slam!  Another run scores for extra security and opposing team can't answer.

The announcers said it was the first time in the conference's history that a team had won the title coming out of the loosers bracket.  How fun is that!

For the 4th time in school history, son's team is one of the 64.   I am thinking/hoping/praying more history will be made this weekend......

Love this story and can relate to Bonnie forcing a game that lasted all day.

Clemson entered as #6 seed. So if unable to play and ACC round robin format, Miami would have won the title entering as top seed.

Which regional and best of luck.

keewart,

What you aren't telling everyone is that your son was in the middle of that historic comeback...not just the game winning homerun.  I was going to send you a PM today but saw this post....so I want everybody to know that your son was one of the BIG reasons William & Mary made it to the regional because without his bat they'd be coming home right now.  Yes, I know it is was a team effort but your son was the engine.

With that said, they are on a roll right now and playing the best baseball of the year.  They are in a tough bracket.  UVA, Bryant (my alma mater), ECU and William & Mary in Charlottesville regional.  I'm going to try to get to a couple games, and hope your son continues his hot bat against UVA and ECU.  ;-)

So happy for your son, the team and school.  As FENWAYSOUTH said "your son was the engine," I watched both games and can attest to that!!  A never give up, we are always in the ballgame attitude by the team had them fighting , kicking + swinging all the way until the bitter end.  It paid off big time!  We are all "thinking/hoping/praying more history will be made this weekend......" right along with you.

Some of the underlying storylines:

W&M's current head coach was an assistant coach at Bryant.

The former Head Coach at W&M was a HC at Bryant, and is the coach that recruited my son.

With UVA and W&M both in Virginia, many of the players have played together, or against each other in HS or travel ball.  keewartson has even played with (and against) three of the ECU players.

ECU used to be in the CAA conference.

Talk about baseball being a small world!

Congrats to W&M on one-helluva post season!  keewart, I almost called you/texted you keewart, but I didn't want you to miss anything.  Boy, W&M played well and made my alma mater look like a JV squad.   Totally outplayed both the #2 and #1 seeds in the regional.  The future is bright for W&M.

Best of luck to ECU in the super regionals as they are a formidable team.
