Re: In what states has your son(s) played baseball?

justbaseball ·
Some have suggested we make them two separate states! I'm not sure they could come together to form a program like yours down there ncball? But they do have lots of good options anyways. I'll be by your place this evening around 7:00 to see Fernando. Will you be there?

Re: Anatomy of a Great High School Coach

MTS ·
I accidently posted this in the wrong thread: I know of several coaches in the San Fernando Valley that seem to win year in and year out regardless of the talent on their squad. They seem to share the trait of letting the kids play during the game. They are almost invisible except when they wisely pick the time to discuss the interpretation of the rules with the umpires. One of them appears have only one word in his vocabulary which seems to appropriately address every situation.

Re: "Bad" Birthdays for Baseball players

bbscout, I think we're arguing the definition of good again. I'm saying that our league is better because they win. The teams have more depth. Chatsworth was undefeated and the national champions. They're just down the road and were a better team than any team in our league, bar none. However, if they had played in our league this year they probably wouldn't have been undefeated and as a result wouldn't have been national champions. Our league just has too much depth. It would be interesting...

Re: pitching to catchers glove as a target

MDBallDad ·
1. My son doesn't try to put the ball where the catcher wants it. IOW, my son pitches towards the location that he feels is best. While not disagreeing with the basics of the discussion the one thing I see missing is the importance of the communication required for success between a pitcher and a catcher. At younger ages this may not be as critical because athletic ability of the catcher can react and respond to a ball being thrown to an area not expected. As pitchers develop whether they...

Re: Myths: Chin to Target + Release Ball Closer to Plate

Marshall is absolutely wrong in his interpretation of Newton's laws of Motion. Would you like me to be a bit more direct? So how many people do you know who are built like bows? I guess you could spit a baseball out of your mouth or propel it out of another orifice to simulate a gun. It wouldn't go very far and personally I wouldn't want to touch it. The ball is traveling in an arc up until the point it is released and then and only then after it has left the hand does it go linear. There is...

Re: Stretch or Windup?

Back foot slider ·
Like most things pitching related, it is all about "feel", some are more comfortable from the wind up, while others prefer pitching from the stretch. All things being equal - whether you are coming out of leg lift from the stretch, or wind up, there really is very negligible, to no real advantage to the actual wind up, other than as stated before maybe some "style" points. If there are mechanical differences, then you will see a difference. With young pitchers, I prefer to have them only...

LAball - interesting theory, however like RobT indicates, I would like to see more details of why you think the wind up creates more velo, and especially accuracy. Any mechanics, either wind up or stretch, performed inefficiently will yield poor results, however I do not believe given the premise that both performed efficiently, one will provide better results over the other. Once the body begins to move forward, I don't believe there is any difference whether one started from the stretch of...

Great topic... I think many pitchers lose velocity from the stretch due to their focus being on the runner and the traditional slide step. Fernando Rodney is a great example of moving exceptionally well through the center of his body and the power of rotation. If you watch Sonny Gray close enough, he'll turn the front foot in, as you will see in this video. The goal is to "pre-load" the hips. I hope it helps. http://youtu.be/H_IzSJW9ogU

Just out of curiosity, because he’s a friend of mine and I know something of his history, would you say Fernando Vina fell into that category? If you don’t want to share your thoughts publicly, please PM me. I didn’t get to see him prior to being in the ML, but I’ve gotten to know his parents and many of his friends, including former coaches and peers, and from what I gather, he’s definitely what I’d call a Type “A” grinder.

Fernando Vina had it all.He was very skilled & played with tremendous passion for the game. He was an above average runner, had as sure a pair of hands as you could find, outstanding eye hand coordination, and a ++ arm. He is among the 5 best ever to turn the DP IMO. Best of all he was a great teammate who loved to win.He was a lot of fun to coach. On top of all that he has super parents & his Mom makes the best Cuban food anywhere. JW

Fenway - As a business discussion, I'm keeping him on the team, on the field & hitting in the middle of the lineup! The Dodgers are in the business of baseball, putting butts in the seats & selling shirts. He helps them do all of those things. The Dodgers arguably haven't had a more exciting player since Fernando Valenzuela arrived from a small pueblo in Mexico! Fernando mania has become Puig mania! Is Puig a little crazy? Does he make poor decisions on and off the field? Absolutely.

Did anyone play in the Constellation Energy League ? I heard about it earlier this summer and TMM expressed interest. I never heard anything more and thought it never materialized. I don't remember seeing anything on HSBBW either, but I am not here that often. Looking over the four teams' rosters, I see most players are in their 20s. There are a couple dozen with MLB experience, including 43 year old Fernando Rodney who even appeared in a game.

My son tore his labrum in his non throwing shoulder during a BP session at a college camp. The first thing the Ortho said was "I bet you have a violent swing and you finish with one hand". He was correct. Its been almost 3 years now and if he accidentally finishes his swing one handed his shoulder will still remind him to knock it off.

The Yankees scouts operate the AC team. They expend $$ and time to coordinate the players to the West Coast into the Hotels and to the field. The Yankee scouts are responsible for the players. The young man has ability or he would not expose himself to the 300 pro scouts, who know the father and the College Coaches. The "pressure" is great!!!! During my years, we had sons of Fernando Valenzuela, Dave LaRoche, Fred Claire and a Movie actor. Bob

I think we hear of less because there is less use. Although there was one D1 pitcher who was suspended for 4 games for foreign substance on his mitt, I don't know of anyone who was suspended this year due to positive testing. NCAA provides a list of banned substances, with medical exceptions, and players usually will contact trainer for info on sports supplements and meds. MLB and its affiliates do the same thing. NCAA randomly tests players during post season. You come out of the dugout and...

Billy Wagner, Marcus Stroman, Tim Lincecum, Fernando Rodney come to mind. Pedro Martinez was not tall and neither was Trevor Hoffman. If you are willing to pursue it, these are examples and...
