Taking a part-time load at 2 year school won't start the 5 year clock or cause him to be a transfer student, provided he doesn't attend any practices at the 2 year school. (14.5.2 and 14.2.1)

So he can take a couple of courses, enroll full time in the spring, and be eligible.
