The ability to catch a ball is a very complex maneuver. The point of the study was not to figure out how to teach youngsters to catch a fly ball as coaches figured that out decades and decades ago
The point was to figure out the dynamics and models that describe "mathematically" how to catch a ball specifically and more generally how human depth perception works. I doubt there are many little league coaches out there who know how to generate the models.
