Twins fans LOVED Torii Hunter and would have been thrilled to have him stay here for the rest of his career, but most understood that it wasn't possible financially at the time.

But Joe Mauer is OUR HOMETOWN BOY. Born and raised in Minnesota, drafted by the Twins out of HS. The Twins HAD to sign Mauer, or leave most of us crying for a long, long time.

In my eyes, there is no comparison between those two contract decisions, which confirms your point about the announcers.
