CoachB25 - Riding off into the Sunset

From a song by Rascal Flatts:

“… I’ve lived in this place and I know all the faces
Each one is different but they’re all the same
They mean no harm but it’s time that I face it
They’ll never allow me to change
But I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong

I’m movin on
I’m movin on

At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarantees, but I’m not alone
There comes a time in everyone’s life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone

I’m movin on
I’m movin on

I’ve resigned as the Head Coach for Triad High School. What a great ride I’ve had these past 9 years. I’m the most blessed person on the face of the earth. In 1998 after winning a second state title and assisting in approximately 450+ varsity win, the administration of Edwardsville High School decided I wasn’t good enough to be their head coach. Triad gave me a chance. Last week we won our 200th game while I was the head coach. In all, we went 201 – 88 in my time here and won 4 Regional and 1 sectional title. The secret here for a school of under 1,300 that had to take on schools of 2,000-2,600 is that we have great kids, tremendous assistant coaches, an administration that allowed me to do what I had to do and fantastic parents.

I would mention that positions where a baseball coach can simply coach the game are rare. Here, I had to raise money without being able to have fundraisers so I did so through camps etc.. You have to be adept at maintenance/grounds keeping and so, your field requires so much work. I can rarely think of a Sunday where I haven’t spent time either working a camp or working on my field. In fact, I can’t think of any Sunday for the last 9 years where I haven’t done one and/or the other. The hardest thing about coaching is what it does to your family. It’s hard to leave the game on the field. Your highs are so high and your lows are so low. You have to be everything to everyone and yet, I personally struggled with being Dad. My daughter has already played approximately 25 games. I haven’t seen a third of them. Thank God I was at the game where she was hit by a line drive. She is a pitcher and so, … As I have told a local reporter, I now have to choose between the thing I love the most in this life (Triad Baseball) and the person I love the most (Brianna). I intend to be there to watch her play the next four years since she enters high school this fall. I want to thank all of you that have had kind things to say about my program and kids. God Bless you all.
