Recovery disks will reset your computer to original factory settings.
Your info is probably still on the HD. There are several things you can do to correct the situation and I suggest you talk to a few other teckies to try and recover the data and find out why it is malfunctioning.
There are ways of restarting a computer in different modes to find the problem.
