It would make sense to me if a coach liked a kid's performance at an event and contacted the kid's coach for more info and then pulled the trigger, but I'm at the age now where the only thing that makes sense to me is that nothing makes sense.

Yes. I don't know if it is uncommon or common but I know a kid "extremely well" who was offered by a NESCAC school after one HeadFirst event. He met all the criteria @used2lurk detailed out and nailed the college as well.
