I think what the rule is in theory and what is called in practice are not exactly the same in this situation. In theory, any time a batter is hit by a ball in fair territory he is out. In practice, it is rare for a batter to be called out on this play even if he has started out of the box and is technically in fair territory. It's a bang-bang situation and most umps give the batter the benefit of the doubt.
