Bob,

Assuming that you are asking about a regular redshirt, and not a medical redshirt, the regulations are fairly simple. If you do not play in an intercollegiate competition for the entire season, then you qualify as a redshirt and do not lose that year of eligibility.

Under NCAA guidelines (Div I), you have 5 years to play 4 beginning at the date of full time enrollment. Div II I think is a little bit different in that you have 10 semesters to play 8 (but I don't think they have to be consecutive.)

Bottom line with redshirting, you are able to practice with the team, continue to develop as a player, but not allowed to play in a game. Except in the case of a medical redshirt, even pinch hitting or pinch running in one inning removes the possibility of redshirting.
