Div 3 recruiting timeline

My son, Jr class of 2011, wants to play college ball. Right now, I don't know if this will happen as he needs to fill out more physically and show that he has the motivation to do what it takes to become a college player. He has good skills, but I don't think he's ready to be seen by college coaches yet. We think he's too skinny to attend a showcase right now. If the goal is to play for a small D3 school, will he be at a disadvantage if we don't start contacting potential programs until after the Spring 2010 season?
