If I am understanding right, you want you front foot at least parallel with your back, if not more closed. Opening up your foot( in your case pointing it at the pitcher) will make your whole upper side fly open and that is a big nono. I suggest closing your front toe( or turning it in) so that will minimize the chance of flying open and pulling off the ball.
